September 15, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 21 This year, celebrate Oktoberfest with authentic German fare and beverages at Kirker’s Inn – the premier German American restaurant in Bergen and Passaic counties. Starting this week (Sept. 15) and continuing into the month of October, Chef/Owner Ginger Pheifer will be serving a variety of specialties in addition to her popular signature dishes. “We’ll have authentic sauerbraten (made with her award-winning ginger snap gravy), Kranier sausage – a smoked bratwurst, Nuehrenberg sausage, and pork shank – a Bavarian-style osso bucco, rouladen, goulash, spaetzel, potato dumplings, potato pancakes, braised red cabbage, and homemade sauerkraut,” Pfeifer said. Desserts will include apple streudel, black forest cake, and German chocolate cake. The inn features a full bar with German beers on tap, a wine list, and Happy Hour specials. For the upcoming festivities, an assortment of German beers will be available, including Oktoberfest, Weissbeer, and Bitburger. Kirker’s also offers “Country Lunch” specials, early bird specials (available from noon to 6 p.m. and all day on Thursdays), and dinner specials. On Tuesday nights, the inn offers diners its top six entrees for just $12 between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. Enjoy prime rib, stuffed shrimp, a “wurst” platter, wienerschnitzel, sauerbraten, or a combination of broiled or fried seafood. These entrées are served with a choice of soup Celebrate Oktoberfest at Kirker’s Inn in Hawthorne or salad. While Kirker’s boasts delicious and reasonably priced fare served in a friendly and casual atmosphere, reservations are highly recommended, especially during Oktoberfest. Pfeifer adds, “We still serve our regular menu, which includes burgers and thin-crust pizza.” Many long-time area restaurants know Kirker’s for its crispy, thin-crust pizza, and the inn is still making it the same way. As for Kirker’s burgers, it’s hard to beat the “Kirker Burger” – a half-pound burger served on a toasted roll with lettuce and tomato and melted Swiss cheese with onion rings and fries. Diners also enjoy Kirker’s variety of schnitzels and “wursts,” homemade meatloaf, seafood – including Maryland-style crab cakes, chicken and pasta dishes, salads, sandwiches, and “Kirker-tizers.” Phiefer and her husband Andy have been cooking authentic German food for over 40 years. The two owned the King’s Ransom in Waldwick for 24 years before they purchased Kirker’s Inn 16 years ago. Their son Victor recently joined in the family business as the inn’s manager. Kirker’s is available to host small parties (up to 35 people) by reservation. Call the inn for details. Visit Kirker’s Inn at 237 Diamond Bridge Avenue, Hawthorne, or call to ask about their takeout menu. Gift certificates are available. Hours are Monday through Saturday from noon to midnight.
