Page 12 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • September 15, 2010 Midland Park Matters and the entire site will be repaved. The improvements were approved by the zoning board of adjustment in May, 2009. The U-Save property is not expected to be developed in the near future. The station, which has been closed since the fall of 2005 when the underground tanks were removed, is undergoing remediation and monitoring under the jurisdiction of the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. The ground contamination remediation process approved by the NJDEP calls for using vapor extraction devices to extract the gasoline trapped in the soil and burn off the residue. The soil will be stored on site until it can be carted away, about a two-week period. Additionally, the water in the bedrock aquifer will be pumped, the volatile compounds will be removed using an air stripper, and the treated water will be discharged to an injection trench at the site. The water will be sampled and analyzed on a regular basis prior to re-injection into the ground. The process can take as long as 10 years, officials have said in the past. A 10-ft high wooden equipment shed is expected to be erected in the near future at the rear of the one-acre lot. Informed sources said that the project had been held up waiting for PSE&G to connect electric service to the shed to operate the equipment. The property owner was recently issued a summons by the town’s zoning officer for violations of the property maintenance code, including high grass and weeds. Work begins on two abandoned gas stations Activity has increased in recent weeks at the site of two former gas stations in Midland Park: the U-Save at Godwin and Paterson avenues and the Citgo station at Godwin and Central avenues in Wortendyke. The Wortendyke station is being refurbished and is expected to reopen as a Valero station/repair center within two months. At the present time, the existing building is being renovated but will retain its colonial look. It will be outfitted with new barrier-free bathrooms and new doors and windows, according to its owners. Multi-purpose pumps offering gasoline and diesel fuel, and two tanks are being installed. Three new islands will be covered by a 64ft. long canopy with recessed lighting and lower voltage to reduce light spillage. Landscape islands will be increased, Dave Lancaster selected to head recreation board Dave Lancaster was recently selected to head the Midland Park Board of Recreation. He succeeds the late Robert Greer, who had resigned from the board prior to his death in July. The board has two new members as well, Doug Hamilton and Robert Sansone. Lancaster, known to everyone as “Font”, has been a part of the borough’s recreation programs since June, 1974, when he started working as a barn attendant. He started taking care of the Dairy Street fields “because it was summer and slow inside,” he said, and the rest is history. Midland Park’s ball fields are the pride of local athletes and the envy of competing teams. He retired from the barn monitoring position in April, 2006 and was appointed a regular member of the recreation board in January. Lancaster said the board’s priority will be to develop a code of conduct that will apply to all sports. “We hope to have it in place for the next sports - junior basketball and wrestling,” he said. The code of conduct, which became controversial last spring when coaches and parents complained it was not being fairly enforced, if at all, now reads, in part: “It is therefore essential for parents, coaches and officials to encourage youth athletes to embrace the values of good sportsmanship. Moreover, adults involved in youth sports events should be models of good sportsmanship and should lead by example by demonstrating fairness, respect and self control.   Monday, September 27, 2010 • 8am 53 Schoolhouse Rd., Oak Ridge, NJ Bowling Green Golf Club First Class Elegance at Affordable Prices Foursomes - Limited Spots Available • Shot Gun Start All players must be paid in full by Sat., Sept. 18 $160 Per Person Includes: Continental Breakfast, Lunch, Greens Fees, Golf Cart, Prizes, 2 Hour Open Bar and Dinner at Legend’s Steakhouse Sponsor A Hole For: Gold - $250 • Silver - $150 • Standard - $75 EMMANUEL CANCER FOUNDATION Charity Headquarters Located in Midland Park All proceeds go to M  
