Beefsteak Dinner planned The Church of the Immaculate Conception, 900 Darlington Avenue, Mahwah, will host a Beefsteak Dinner on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m. The all-you-can-eat dinner will be supplied by Baskinger’s. Board of health to meet The Mahwah Board of Health will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the municipal building, 475 Corporate Drive. Parent group offers workshop The Mahwah Parent Advocacy Group will present a workshop for parents, “SPAN Awareness,” on Wednesday, Sept. 29 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mahwah High School media center. The school is located at 50 Ridge Road in Mahwah. This free workshop is designed to provide parents/ caregivers and community members with information on the activities, staff, and services that SPAN (Statewide Parent Advocacy Group of New Jersey) has to offer to New Jersey residents. SPAN, the state’s leading parent advocacy agency, aims to empower families and inform and involve professionals and other individuals interested in the healthy development and educational rights of children. Local student recognized Tamara Ramirez of Mahwah has been named to the Dean’s List at Berkeley College, Bergen Campus in Paramus for the spring 2010 quarter. Berkeley College students who achieve a grade point average of 3.50 or better with a minimum of 12 academic credits qualify for the Dean’s List. Seniors plan trip to Little Italy The Mahwah Seniors will visit the Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy on Saturday, Sept. 25. The bus will depart at 11 a.m. and leave Manhattan at 5 p.m. to return to Mahwah. The cost of the trip is $20 per person and includes round trip transportation to Little Italy. The Mahwah Senior Center, located at 475 Corporate Drive, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Chamber to honor Inserra The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will honor Lawrence Inserra Jr. as Humanitarian of the Year at the Chamber’s 19th Annual Golf Outing and Dinner on Sept. 13. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Inserra’s chosen charity, the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. The honoree is president of Inserra Supermarkets, Inc., a large supermarket chain that operates ShopRite stores throughout New Jersey and New York. This year’s Golf Outing will be held at the prestigious Tuxedo Club in Tuxedo, New York. The event is open to all interested golfers; Chamber membership is not required. Those who do not golf are invited to join the group for cocktails and dinner (jackets required) at the elegant Clubhouse on the Lake from 5 to 8 p.m. The awards ceremony will take place during dinner. Skyliners Big Swing Band to appear Enjoy the sounds of Big Band Swing with the 14-member Skyliners Big Swing Band at the Mahwah Public Library on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. Though first made popular over 70 years ago, the big band swing sound has a popularity that spans the years. Originally founded by John Micalizio, a member of the Tommy Dorsey Band and arranger for George Shearing
and other major recording artists, the Skyliners Big Swing Band has, since 1952, remained true in style and composition. The group performs only the original arrangements of the great band leaders. The concert is free. No tickets are necessary. Seats will be available on a “first come” basis. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Varian Fry exhibit to open A traveling exhibit from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, “Varian Fry, Assignment: Rescue, 1940-1941,” will be on display at Ramapo College from Sept. 1 through Oct. 8 in the Pascal Gallery, Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts. A reception will be held Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. At 7 p.m. that evening, Dr. Mordecai Paldiel, former director of Yad Vashem’s Department of the Righteous, will give a speech about Fry’s humanitarian mission in France. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m.

Learn about trends in art Professor Emily Harvey will present “Taste and Trends in Art: Modern and Postmodern” at the Mahwah Public Library on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. Professor Harvey will discuss the origins of modern and post-modern art. She will show how modern artworks of the past introduced ideas that were different and shocking at the time, but were later accepted as masterpieces. A teacher of art history at Rockland Community College, Professor Harvey is currently the head of the art department. In 2004, she received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. “Taste and Trends in Art” is free. No tickets are necessary. Seats will be offered on a “first come” basis.
