Page 2 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • September 8, 2010 Villadom Happenings Eastern Christian Children’s Retreat Fair set The annual Eastern Christian Children’s Retreat Country Fair will be held on Saturday, Sept. 25 on Wyckoff Municipal Field, which is located behind town hall. Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Rain date is Oct. 2.) The day’s event will include food, rides, pony rides, farm animals, fall plants and produce, live entertainment, and activities and game for children. The Eastern Christian Children’s Retreat is a nonprofit organization serving the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities. The retreat was founded in 1965 and opened its main building in 1972. Swimmers invited to tryouts The Bergen Barracudas Swim Team will hold tryouts for swimmers (age six through high school students) at the Ramapo College Bradley Center Pool in Mahwah. Residents of Bergen and Passaic counties and Rockland County, New York, are welcome to attend. Tryouts are scheduled for Sept. 9 and 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Sept. 11 from 9 to 11 a.m. The Bergen Barracudas, a parent-run organization, competes in U.S. Swimming Association meets. West Bergen offers playgroup workshop West Bergen Mental Healthcare’s Asperger’s Related Services Department is offering a playgroup workshop with facilitators Rachael Ostroski, M.A., Ed.S., MFT and Katie Gately, M.A. on Fridays from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. for children ages five through seven. The program, which will run from Oct. 1 through 29, is for children who need improvement in play skills with peers. MPHS Class of 1970 plans reunion The Midland Park High School Class of 1970 is holding its 40th Class Reunion on Saturday, Nov. 27 at the Hotel Westminster in Livingston. New Deal programs explored The Hermitage History Roundtable will host Dave Smilon, professor of history at Bergen Community College, on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hermitage, 335 North Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus. During the Great Depression, the WPA, PWA, and CCC put people back to work building infrastructure and improving the environment across America. Smilon will discuss the work done in Bergen County and the projects that are still here and in use. The Saddle River and Emerson municipal buildings, the Westwood Post Office, and Graydon Pool in Ridgewood are all New Deal projects. Learn more about this fascinating time period in Bergen County’s history. The program is free and open to the public. Ridgewood Breakers hold tryouts The Ridgewood YMCA Breakers Competitive Swim Team will hold tryouts Sept. 7 through 9 at the Ridgewood YMCA Oak Street branch. There is a $10 registration fee for tryouts. Swimmers may register on the day of their tryout. The tryout and registration schedule is as follows: Tuesday, Sept. 7, children ages nine through 12 register at 4 p.m. and try out from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Sept. 8, children ages eight and under register at 4:30 p.m. and try out from 5 to 7 p.m.; on Thursday, Sept. 9, children ages 13 and up register at 4:30 p.m. and try out from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday is also the make up tryout day. The swimmers’ tryout is based on the age the swimmer will be on Dec. 1, 2010. The Breakers Swim Team encompasses all ability levels, providing youth the opportunity to acquire the skills, self- Aidian and Hannah beat the heat at a recent Ice Cream Social hosted by Calvary Lutheran Church in Allendale. Social siblings discipline, confidence, and physical conditioning to become the best swimmers they can be. Coffee, tap dance classes available All Bergen County seniors (age 60 and up) are invited to attend a Newcomer’s Coffee on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. at the Northwest Bergen Senior Activity Center in Midland Park. Attendees may tour the center and join in the arthritis exercise class beginning at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch at 11:45 a.m. and a sing-a-long with Mary Stella at 12:30 p.m. Lunch is available for a $1.25 donation. Contact the center to RSVP. Tap dancing classes for seniors are held every morning at the Northwest Bergen Regional Senior Center, 4650 Center Street Midland Park. Woman’s Club to host Linda Fairstein The Woman’s Club of Franklin Lakes will host its annual author luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 20, with best-selling author and former prosecutor Linda Fairstein. Fairstein was managing and lead attorney for the prosecution of the “Preppy Murderer” and “Central Park Jogger” cases. She will share her experiences at the Woman’s Club of Franklin Lakes’ annual fall fundraiser beginning at 11 a.m. at the Indian Trail Club, Franklin Lakes. Now a best-selling author of over 11 books, Fairstein will also sign copies of her newest novel, “Hell Gate” during the fundraiser. Introduced this past spring, “Hell Gate” quickly rose to number nine on The New York Times best-seller list and was recommended in “O: The Oprah Magazine.” The Woman’s Club event will benefit Gilda’s Club, The Center for Women’s Heart Health at the Valley Hospital, student scholarships, and other charities.
