District improves ranking among top high schools
by Frank J. McMahon Mahwah High has improved its ranking in the recent listing of the state’s Top 100 Public High Schools in the September issue of New Jersey Monthly Magazine. The ranking of the high school improved from 68th place in 2008 to 56th place in the 2010 report. The list of the top high schools in the state is based on data reported by the schools to the Department of Education and the most recent New Jersey School Report card for the 2009-10 school year. Only public high schools are included in the list. Special education, vocational-technical schools, and schools that do not have report card data are not included in the listing. Monmouth University’s Polling Institute analyzed the data by first standardizing individual indicator scores so that small differences did not have a disproportionate impact on the rankings. However, very large differences were not minimized in the relative scores. The indicators were then grouped into three categories, and the summary scores for each category were added together to arrive at the final overall score.
