Book group to discuss Hansen work Not by Bread Alone, a spiritual book discussion group, will meet on Sunday, Sept. 26 from 5 to 6 p.m. at Panera Bread, 1300 State Route 17 in Ramsey. The title under discussion will be “Mariette in Ecstasy” by Ron Hansen. This study of religious passion concerns an extraordinary spiritual experience in rural upstate New York just after the turn of the century. When she is 17, Mariette Baptiste, educated daughter of the local doctor, enters the cloistered convent of Our Lady of the Afflictions as a postulant. Her religious fervor makes an impact on the small community of nuns whose days and nights are measured in a round of prayer and farm work that changes only with the seasons. Their ordered life is disrupted as Mariette begins to fall into a series of trances from which she awakens with stigmata. Hansen discusses the skepticism, jealousy, and adoration evoked in the nuns, and Mariettas own response and that of the Mother Superior.
