Girl Scout organizes bone marrow drive
Anna Klein, an eighth grader from Ramsey, is organizing a bone marrow drive that will be held Nov. 13 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Saint Paul’s School, 187 Wyckoff Avenue, Ramsey. Klein’s effort, which is an essential part of her work toward achieving the Girl Scout Silver Award, is highly personal, as the drive is being held in honor of her cousin, Patrick. “(Patrick) was diagnosed with a rare secondary cell disease called HLH (hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis). The only curative treatment for Patrick is a bone marrow transplant,” Klein explained. “Patrick is fortunate that the doctors have found a compatible bone marrow donor for him through the National Bone Marrow Registry. He will be having his bone marrow transplant this month. “I realized that many patients with cancer and other blood diseases are not as fortunate. Only three out of 10 patients are able to get a bone marrow transplant. I decided to organize this bone marrow drive in the hope of finding donors for the many patients waiting for their second chance at life.” With the support of her Girl Scout Troop, Klein was able to register 117 people to commit to attending the drive on Nov. 13.
