The Ramsey Police Department has partnered with the Center for Alcohol and Drug Resources to launch the anti-underage drinking campaign called “Sticker Shock.” This program is designed to deter the distribution of alcohol to minors. In the past, the police department participated in “Cops in Shops,” a program designed to stop the use of fraudulent identification by underage purchasers inside local liquor stores. The Cops in Shops program involves undercover police officers who pose as store employees, and oversee liquor transactions during peak hours. The Sticker Shock campaign relies instead upon the dissemination of conspicuous neon green warning labels. The labels, which warn of the consequences for an adult who provides alcohol to an underage

person, are affixed to large cases of beer and individual bottles of high-proof vodka. In some cases, the stickers are placed on the store’s bags instead. A recent study found that older family members, friends, and strangers are the most common source of alcohol for underage drinkers. Sometimes, persons who are entering, or loitering in the area of a liquor store, are solicited to purchase the alcohol by young passersby. These stickers boldly warn such patrons that they can be fined up to $1,000 and spend up to six months in jail for providing alcohol to a person under 21 years of age. Ramsey Liquors and Brady’s at the Station, both located in downtown Ramsey,
were eager to participate in the program. A group of 12 local young people, accompanied by six adult volunteers, gathered to carry out the operation. A total of 300 stickers were used, which is enough to remain visible for about two weeks. The police department helped introduce the volunteers to the store managers, and subsequently filed the paperwork associated with their participation. Police Chief Bryan Gurney said he viewed the partnership as a conspicuous example of the ongoing collaboration between his department and the regional organizations that serve the residents of Bergen County.
