Boy Scout district honors John R. Urinyi
Ramsey resident John R. Urinyi was honored last week by the Iaoapogh Mountain District of the Northern New Jersey District of the Boy Scouts of America. A celebratory dinner was held at the Indian Trail Club in Franklin Lakes. Friends, family, and fellow Boy Scout supporters were present to pay tribute to Urinyi, who has been active in Scouting for over 45 years. The 2010 Community Service Award recipient was lauded by colleagues, past Boy Scouts, and a fellow SEABEE for his lifetime contributions to Scouting and the community. Chuck Shotmeyer, master of ceremonies for the evening, introduced Urinyi’s long-time friend, William Farrell, who flew in from North Carolina to talk about their time together as SEABEEs. Farrell introduced himself by telling the audience his relationship with Urinyi was of such long standing that he “would fly anywhere, anytime to be with John Urinyi.” During the celebration, Oakland Cub Scout Leader Rob Dente brought in his engineering merit badge card signed by his counselor, Urinyi, in 1973, and Northern New Jersey Boy Scout Council Commissioner Dr. Kenneth King spoke about the honoree’s contributions to Scouting. As a member of Troop 5 in Hackensack, Urinyi earned the rank of Eagle with three palms and was on the camp staff of NoBeBoSco. As an adult, he has served the Boy Scout organization in many positions, including Scoutmaster, roundtable commissioner, district commissioner, district chairman, vice president for district operation, council commissioner, wood badge staff, course director, camp visitation specialist, and as a member of the council executive board and committee. He has received the Silver Beaver, the District Award of Merit, and the Distinguished receiving this award in 2010, the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouts of America. In addition to his involvement with Scout activities, Urinyi is director of capital planning at William Paterson University. He is an active member of Saint Paul Church in Ramsey, where he is a member of the Parish Facility Committee and a Eucharistic minister. A retired Navy captain, he served as a Naval Reserve officer with the Civil Engineer Corps, where he was a commanding officer of a naval construction battalion (SEABEES) and a commodore of a naval construction regiment. He is a professional engineer licensed in New Jersey and New York. He was employed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in the construction department for the World Trade Center. Urinyi and his wife Sheila have resided in Ramsey for over 40 years. They have three children and four grandchildren. Scout Executive of the Northern New Jersey Council Doug Dillow thanked the members of the Community Service Award Committee for their efforts. The committee included Chairman Charles H. Shotmeyer, Ann Cranston, Peter DeKramer, Lorraine DeLuca, Bernard Milano, John Nunziata, Robert Shannon, Robert Tillsley, Ester Vierheilig, and District Executive Anthony Chirdo. This is the seventh year the award has been presented. The previous honorees were Charles H. Shotmeyer in 2004, William J. Commer in 2005, Ester Vierheilig in 2006, Bernard J. Milano in 2007, John J.
