Page 18 THE VILLADOM TIMES II & IV • October 6, 2010 ‘Hairspray’ (continued from Entertainment page) best friend, whose mother, Prudy (Susan Mosher), is determined to prevent her from having any fun or expanding her horizons. With her jittery manner, cartoon-like posture, and naughty twinkle in her eyes, Penny will march to her own drummer, as she takes a personal stand on a significant social issue. Motormouth Maybelle (NaTasha Yvette Williams) runs a record shop that specializes in rhythm and blues music, which never gets any play on “The Corny Collins Show.” The black kids gather at Maybelle’s to listen to music and dance, and eventually Tracy and Link find it a welcome refuge. Maybelle’s rendition of “I Know Where I’ve Been” rocks the house as it chronicles a history of struggle and frustration. “Hairspray” is highly entertaining, but at its core are themes of self-worth, social equality, family loyalty, and the negative side of show biz. These are integrated effectively into the fabric of the show, but never overshadow the fun. In the audience were scores of children who were completely engaged by the show. If you are looking for solid family entertainment, “Hairspray” fills the bill. “Hairspray” will play the following performance schedule through Oct. 24: Wednesdays at 7 p.m., Thursdays at 1:30 and 7 p.m., Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 1:30 and 7 p.m., and Sundays at 1:30 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $92 and may be ordered by calling (973) 3764343, online at www.papermill.org, or at the Paper Mill Playhouse box office on Brookside Drive in Millburn. very good in a small film that shouldn’t pass beneath your radar. There are no extras. “The Human Centipede” (IFC Films), available on Blu-ray and DVD, is about two pretty American girls (Ashley C. Williams, Ashlynn Yennie) who are on a road trip through Europe. In Germany, their car breaks down, leaving them alone in the woods at night. They seek shelter in an isolated villa, where they wake the next morning to find themselves trapped in a basement along with a Japanese businessman (Akihiro Kitamura). An older German man, Josef Heiter (Dieter Laser), introduces himself as a retired surgeon who gained fortune and fame by separating Siamese twins. He then calmly tells his three “patients” that they will be surgically attached to each other in a ghastly operation to connect their gastric systems. Thus will be born a new creature: the human centipede. Despite its gruesome premise, the film avoids the overly graphic and never really kicks in the kind of frights such a film should induce. Director Tom Six elicits a vivid performance from Laser, who might have entered the ranks of horror icons Freddy Krueger or Leatherface with better material. Bonuses include deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, an interview with director Tom Six, and a feature-length documentary. Also available on Blu-ray are “The Maltese Falcon” and “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” both starring Humphrey Bogart; “A Nightmare on Elm Street;” “The Last of the Mohicans” (Daniel Day-Lewis); and “Bad Lieutenant” (Harvey Keitel). Bonuses include an alternate ending, production diaries hosted by Jackie Chan, a music video featuring Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith; a making-of featurette; and “On Location: The Karate Kid Interactive Map of China.” “The Karate Kid” is also available in single-disc Blu-ray and DVD formats. “Elvis & Anabelle” (Vivendi Entertainment) stars Blake Lively (“Gossip Girl”) and Sam Minghella (“Syriana”) in a romantic love story with an uncommon twist. Groomed to be the perfect pageant candidate, Anabelle (Lively) is on the verge of winning it all when she tragically dies onstage. Her body is delivered to the funeral home of Elvis’ family, but just as she is ready to be embalmed, her spirit returns. Trying to make sense of it all, she turns to Elvis (Minghella) for comfort and finds a new chance at love. This is a good example how the right casting can carry an entire film, even though its premise might be somewhat shaky. Both Lively and Minghella play endearing characters and they have great on-screen chemistry, so it is a pleasure to watch them and easy to dismiss the film’s shortcomings.
