Entire ‘Six Million Dollar Man’ series now available
by Dennis Seuling This is the time of year when elaborate gift sets are released to take advantage of the holiday gift-giving season. One of the most impressive is “The Six Million Dollar Man: The Complete Series” (Time Life). The show originally aired from January 1974 through March 1978 on ABC. It starred Lee Majors as Colonel Steve Austin, an astronaut who had been critically injured when the moon landing craft he was testing crashed over a Southwestern desert. In a desperate attempt to save his life, government doctors decided to try a new type of operation designed to replace certain human parts with atomic-powered electromechanical devices capable of superhuman performance. Steve survived as a cyborg -- part human, part machine -- whose mechanical replacements gave him tremendous running speed, a right arm of extraordinary strength, and a left eye with a built-in screen that endowed him with penetrating vision. Armed with these weapons, Steve set out on perilous missions for the Office of Scientific Information to confront international villains, mad scientists and, to keep the show jumping, a few alien monsters. In January 1975, bionic woman Jaime Sommers (Lindsay Wagner) was introduced as Steve’s love interest. The 40-disc box set is pricey at $240, but it’s definitely a fan’s dream. All 100 digitally re-mastered episodes of the series’ five-season run are here along with over 17 hours of bonus features. Extras include new interviews with Lee Majors and Lindsay Wagner, all three pilot movies of “The Six Million Dollar Man,” all three reunion movies, all crossover episodes of “The Bionic Woman,” 17 featurettes, audio commentaries and other interactive features, a bionic sound chip, and a 3-D image of Steve Austin. This release, unavailable in stores, may be ordered online at www.timelife. (Timothy Olyphant) and his friend Sol Starr (John Hawkes) come to town determined to open a hardware business. They eventually cross paths with Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine) and his companion, Calamity Jane (Robin Weigart). Also on hand are a drug-addicted widow (Molly Parker) trying to salvage a gold mining claim, and a downcast hooker (Paula Malcomson) who cares for an orphaned girl. The main character is Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), owner of the Gem Saloon and the best thing about “Deadwood.” Swearengen is a foulmouthed, fearless gentleman thug who touches the lives of everyone in town, for better or worse. The Blu-ray box set contains all 36 episodes on 13 discs. There are over four hours of extras and a bonus disc containing a question and answer session with the cast and creative team, writer David Milch discussing the conclusion of “Deadwood,” the featurette “The Real Deadwood: Out of the Ashes,” and an Al Swearengen audition reel. “The Pillars of the Earth” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) is the eight-part Starz

com. Individual season sets of the show are available in traditional outlets. Another gift set, this one in Blu-ray, is “Deadwood: The Complete Series” (HBO Home Entertainment). “Deadwood” gave the Western genre a new spin with its lawless environment, dark themes, and adult language and situations. Set in an ungoverned part of South Dakota shortly after George Armstrong Custer’s defeat at the Little Big Horn, “Deadwood” focuses on the growth of a lawless camp town attracting fortune seekers, drifters, bad guys, and burned-out gunman looking for a place to settle down and leave their violent pasts behind them. Prostitutes and others hang on, feeling trapped with nowhere else to go. The show adopted a dramatic style feature films have embraced for years: combining real, historical individuals with fictional ones. Former Montana lawman Seth Bullock
miniseries based on Ken Follett’s best-selling novel. Emerging from the war-torn shadows of England’s Dark Ages, an idealistic mason, Tom Builder (Rufus Sewell), sets out on a quest to construct a glorious cathedral. When his efforts threaten to uncover the dark secrets of people in high places -Bishop Waleran Bigod (Ian McShane) and the battling children of King Henry, Queen Maud (Alison Pill) and King Stephen (Tony Curran) – they will stop at nothing to keep those secrets safe. Also starring are Matthew MacFadyen as Prior Philip, Hayley Atwell as noblewoman Aliena, and Donald Sutherland as Bartholomew. Essentially a Middle Ages soap opera with impressive production values, “The Pillars of the Earth” drags along mercilessly as it attempts to tell many stories and incorporate assorted subplots. It seems TV is picking up the baton of period epic drama now that computer graphics can create worlds that would have been prohibitively expensive just a few years ago. Bonuses include behind-the-scenes featurettes that take a close look at the impressive sets and (continued on Crossword page)
