She explained that the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all the men and women who have served our country. She also pointed out that Veterans Day is celebrated on Nov. 11 because it was on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month that the armistice ended the war. “If we didn’t have veterans, the United States wouldn’t be the great country it is today,” Mesropyan said. “We must remember to thank our veterans and hold in our hearts those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.” Following the singing of “God Bless America” by the entire crowd, Mahwah High School Band students David Ingersoll, Eric Howard, and Nicholas Kosmala played “Taps” simultaneously from three separate locations in the park and the Mahwah Police Honor guard fired a rifle salute. Dr. Richard Wiener, principal at Ramey’s Smith School, assembled a team to educate the students about bullying. The team includes Student Support Counselor Christine Caporuscio, various guidance counselors from the middle school and high school, Officer Tim Shoemaker from the Ramsey DARE Program, and student leaders from Ramsey High School Leadership Group. The team came together during Anti-Violence Week to present expectations at Smith School.
