District issues annual violence/vandalism report
by Frank J. McMahon Ramapo Indian Hills Superintendent Lauren Schoen recently presented the regional high school district’s 200910 violence and vandalism report to the board of education. According to the annual report, there were 40 incidents of violence in the district during 2009-10, including simple assaults where a person attempts to cause bodily injury to another, and fights in which there is a mutual engagement in a physical confrontation that results in bodily injury to either party. These incidents do not include verbal confrontation or a minor confrontation such as a shoving match. Schoen also reported there were two incidents of vandalism, two weapons offenses, and 24 substance abuse offenses. As a result of these acts of violence, vandalism, and substance abuse cases, there were 10 times when the police were notified without complaints being filed, 16 times the police were notified with complaints filed, 35 instances of in-school suspensions, and 81 instances of out-of school suspensions, but no expulsions, unilateral removals, or removal by an administrative law judge. There were 73 student offenders, 24 student victims, and one school personnel victim, but no student victim of a violent criminal offense. The disciplinary actions taken by the school district included assignments, instruction, and/or support services in 73 cases, an in-school program in 25 cases, an in-district program in 25 cases, and home assignment or home instruction in 72 cases, but no out of district programs. During 2008-09, the district reported 30 incidents of violence, six incidents of vandalism, one weapons offense, and 20 substance abuse offenses. Schoen acknowledged, “All in all, it’s up a little bit from last year.” The number of incidents of violence, vandalism, and weapons offenses in the public schools in the state, however, continued to decline, according to an annual report on school violence and vandalism released recently by
Acting Education Commissioner Rochelle Hendricks. Her annual report to the state legislature revealed a three percent decline in the total number of incidents reported by school districts. According to the state report, the individual incidents of violence declined five percent, vandalism three percent, and weapons 15 percent. During the statewide Violence and Vandalism Awareness Week in October, there were activities scheduled at both high schools to address and mitigate the incidence of violence and vandalism in the district. At Ramapo, teachers were asked to include discussions (continued on page 11)
