The Midland Park mayor and council have decided on a number of improvements to the Dairy Street recreation area to be made with grant moneys from the Bergen County Open Space and Recreation Trust Fund, which the borough received in April. The $100,214 matching grant was originally secured for a canopy to cover one of the basketball courts adjacent to the DePhillips Center, but the project was withdrawn following opposition from neighbors. The borough will match these funds dollar for dollar from its own Open Space Trust. The funds will be used to replace the existing bleachers by the Johnny Vander Meer field and the right field retaining wall. A proposal to get a new scoreboard for Veteran’s Field at a cost of $7,000 is also being considered, but the council has yet to give its blessing to that purchase. During last week’s meeting the governing body put off awarding the engineering contract for the work, with Mayor Joseph Monahan asking again for prices for ADA bleachers. At a previous meeting the council had decided to go with regular bleachers with provisions for

accessibility for persons with disabilities for a savings of about $30,000. The council had also sought to hire someone other than the borough engineer to do the observation and inspection work on the project. Borough Clerk Addie Hanna said that both Bergen County Open Space and Community Development grant officials had said a licensed engineer was required to perform these functions and would have to certify to their proper completion. The bleacher project, expected to cost $127,375, will include demolishing the existing 1930s structure, construction of a concrete pad and ADA walkway, construction of a 10 by 20-ft. utility shed under the bleachers, and the purchase of the bleacher system. Irrigation controls will also have to be relocated. The existing retaining wall by right field will be demolished and replaced with a modular block wall system at an estimated cost of $34,000. A 3-ft. high chain link fence will be installed. Grant funds will also be used for previously-approved repairs to the junior baseball field and for a portable mound. These improvements were necessitated when
field sizes were changed for softball play. The girls softball association shares the junior field with baseball. The council is expected to officially vote on the engineering proposal at is Dec. 9 meeting.
