Zabriskie House doors will open to visitors
cally for this occasion by volunteers of the Wyckoff Area Garden Club. Built in 1730 and added onto in 1824, the Zabriskie House is one of the finest examples of American architecture in northern New Jersey. Antique-filled rooms reflect the Dutch colonial heritage that dominated this region during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Although used as a home by the Van Voor Haze, Quackenbush, and Zabriskie families, the structure was also used as a village store, tavern, candy store, hotel, and ballroom. Today, the house and gardens represent the Grace Zabriskie home, a gift to the Township of Wyckoff. Highlighting the day will be self-guided tours throughout the house, giving visitors the opportunity to experience a Wyckoff home as it appeared two centuries ago. In addition, cookies and mulled cider will be served in the home’s period dining room. Holiday music will add to the atmosphere. All area residents are invited to this special event. Those who are studying New Jersey history this year may especially appreciate the experience of being in a local historical home during the holiday season. The admission fee is $5 for adults; $3 for senior citizens and children under the age of 12.

Wyckoff urges ‘Nifty Fifty’ recycling
The Wyckoff Township Committee has adopted a resolution endorsing a Nifty Fifty program of increased and improved recycling, with a nod to Township Administrator Robert Shannon for a big step in the right direction. Township Committeeman Brian Scanlan, who recently coordinated an increased recycling initiative in his own neighborhood, lauded Shannon for taking a comprehensive inventory of street lamp bulbs so the least efficient bulbs could be scheduled for expedited replacement, saving electricity. The township committee concurred. “While the nation has reached an overall recycling rate of more than 28 percent, and the Township of Wyckoff reached 29 percent in 2009, and much more can be done, especially in closing the loop and purchasing products made with recycled content,” the resolution states. Communities that recycle more can achieve considerable savings in terms of haulage and tipping fees for removal of garbage, and may be eligible for grants to save money based on the reduction of materials they take out of the waste stream.
