Page 18 THE VILLADOM TIMES II & IV • November 10, 2010 ‘True Grit’ (continued from Entertainment page) Expect some dark moments, offbeat humor, and unexpected twists along the way. In “The Queen,” Helen Mirren brilliantly captured the public and personal side of Elizabeth II, while in “RED,” she showed her prowess with automatic weapons. The two roles could not be more diverse, and Mirren managed to bring class to both. In “The Debt” (Dec. 29), she and Sam Worthington star in the story of Rachel Singer, a former Mossad agent who endeavored to capture and bring to trial a notorious Nazi war criminal -- the Surgeon of Birkenau -- in a secret Israeli mission that ended with the accused criminal’s death on the streets of East Berlin. Now, 30 years later, a man claiming to be the doctor has surfaced and Rachel must go back to Eastern Europe to uncover the truth. Overwhelmed by haunting memories of her younger self and her two fellow agents, the still-celebrated heroine must relive the trauma of those events and confront the debt she has incurred. The cast includes Sean Astin (“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy), Josh Brolin (“No Country for Old Men”), Corey Feldman (“The Lost Boys”), Martha Plimpton (TV’s “Raising Hope”), Ke Huy-Quan (“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”), Joe Pantoliano (“Cats and Dogs”), and Lupe Ontivaros (TV’s “Lies in Plain Sight”). Though there is only one disc in the box set, extras are abundant. There is a brand new Goonies board game, 10 storyboards, a 64-page souvenir guide, cast commentary with director Richard Donner and all seven principal actors, a making-of documentary, the Cyndi Lauper music video “The Goonies R Good Enough,” and deleted scenes. “Damned by Dawn” (Image Entertainment) pays homage to the classic Hammer horror films that were popular from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s. After receiving a mysterious gift from her dying grandmother, Claire (Renee Willner), takes her new boyfriend home to meet her family at an isolated property in the country. The family reunion begins well, but Claire becomes increasingly uneasy with her grandmother’s medicated mumblings about the banshee coming for her during the night. Later, the family is awakened by frightening shrieks and Claire’s worst fears become a waking nightmare as the Screaming Banshee and her army of the undead return to unleash blood-soaked fury on them all. Horror films have to be consistent if viewers are to buy into them. “Damned by Dawn” likes to create bloody scenes for shock effect, but loses sight of dramatic cohesion. For example, the Banshee turns one person into a killer zombie, while in other cases the people it kills remain deceased. Why the special treatment for just one character? The one good touch in the film is the creature’s appearance in shadows, behind people, lurking in the background, or simply observing. This does create suspense, but is eventually overdone. Personally, I don’t think ghosts or spirits rank with vampires, zombies, or monsters as subjects of terror. “Damned by Dawn,” demonstrates how difficult it is to make this supernatural phenomenon scary. Available in both DVD and Blu-ray, “Damned by Dawn” contains cast and crew audio commentary and a making-of documentary. “Love Ranch” (National Entertainment Media) features Academy Award-winner Joe Pesci as entrepreneur Charlie Bontempo, who opens Nevada’s first legalized brothel in the late 1970s with his wife, Grace (Helen Mirren). When Grace falls for South American heavyweight boxer Armando Bruza, who is invited to train at the ranch at Charlie’s behest, an unlikely love triangle develops, resulting in uncontrollable passion and murder. This fictionalized account of a true story co-stars Gina Gershon. Bonuses on both the Blu-ray and DVD editions include audio commentary by director Taylor Hackford, an introduction by Hackford and Helen Mirren, and deleted scenes.
