Page 12 THE VILLADOM TIMES II & IV • November 10, 2010 Midland Park Matters The Midland Park Holiday Tree Lighting Celebration will be moving back to borough hall this year to accommodate the large community turnout. Event organizers say the average attendance in recent years has been 500 residents. The event had been held at borough hall until 2004, when reconstruction prevented officials from holding the event at that location. “In 2005, I was asked to relocate the event to Veterans Plaza,” Midland Park Recreation Director Lori Dent said. “With the help of our DPW (the department of public works), police, fire, ambulance, CERT, the Midland Park Chamber of Commerce, and many other local organizations, businesses, and volunteers, the recreation department was able to relocate and expand the venue of our Holiday Tree Lighting celebration.” Businesses and volunteers interested in participating in this year’s ceremony are invited to contact the recreation department at (201) 652-2747 or e-mail mprec@optonline.net. The entertainment venue for the evening, and parking and shuttle information will be posted on the recreation website by Nov. 22 and E-Noticed to all residents later this montth. The flag was given to the staff and students of the Needlecraft School, across Godwin Avenue from the Post Office, in appreciation “for their dedication to the men and women of the US Marine Corps.” The students have been making pillows and sending them, along with toiletry items and other necessities, to soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Needlecraft Director Ginny Fawcett asked the postmaster if the flag could be flown from their flagpole for a week so that the entire community could see it. Post office officials have decided to keep it and raise it daily until it is no longer serviceable. “It’s a nice thing of them to do,” said Fawcett. “It pleases me to see it across the street. I say a little prayer for the soldiers every time.” Since operation “Adopt a Soldier” began in 2003, Fawcett and her students have sewn, stuffed and delivered thousands of pillows to American soldiers overseas. The program gained national prominence earlier this year when it was featured on NBC’s Today Show, followed in September by a sizable donation from the Texas Road House restaurant chain to help sustain the program.
