For instance, Campion pointed out that the township received $631,000 less in state aid, $225,000 less in interest income, and $175,000 less in hotel tax income. The budget also includes the contracted 2010 salary increase percentages for all three township unions whose contracts expire at the end of this year. Police employees covered by the PBA contract will receive a four percent raise, the white collar employees will receive a 3.5 percent salary increase, and the blue collar employees will receive a two percent increase. Although the local school district tax rate might decrease as a result of the school budget defeat in April, that tax rate increase was anticipated at 4.7 cents. With the township’s 2.3 cent property tax rate increase, and a projected one cent increase in the Bergen County tax rate, the township’s total tax rate could rise by eight cents. That eight cent increase in the township’s total property tax rate would result in a property tax increase of $287 per year on a home with the average assessed value. Residents who own homes with a higher assessed value would experience a greater overall tax increase, and those whose homes have a lower assessed value would have a lesser increase.
