Michael Troop Paul Morigi School budget (continued from page 3) Roth responded that it was the intention of the subcommittee that all salaried employees should be impacted by the reduction. Councilman Allan Kidd, who was the only council member to vote against the subcommittee’s recommendation, asked why that group was seeking a reduction of one percent of the district’s employees to put towards health care costs when the state is asking them to contribute 1.5 percent of their salaries toward those costs. Roth responded that the subcommittee felt that one percent was an ample contribution. Kidd also suggested the school board seek a donation from the library board of trustees in the same way the council did. That request has led to the library’s donations to the township of $200,000 last year and $100,000 this year. During the public portion of the meeting, one resident voiced the opinion that the reduction was not at the magnitude the election results suggested. He said the subcommittee should have recommended the teachers accept a zero salary increase so the school board would be in a better position when negotiating with the teachers’ union. A Mahwah High School teacher who attended the meeting thanked the subcommittee for not making a recommendation that would hurt the students.
