1957 Chevy
(continued from page 18) wiper system, A/C system, cooling system, power window system, steering column, and instrumentation? These are just the ones that were already decided. One tricky question now is the need for a spare tire. Due to the type of differential, both rear tires must be the same diameter or the rear will lock up. That means any spare must have the same diameter as the rear tire. However, a tire of that size will not likely clear the front fender if a flat occurs on the front. Do I rely on AAA to fix a tire on the spot? Will “fix-a-flat” plus a small air pump get me to a gas station? Am I worrying about something unlikely to happen? I really underestimated the decisions needed for a custom interior. Is the dash body-colored or interior-colored? Is it painted or covered, vinyl or leather? What type of bucket seats will be used? What about the carpeting, door panel and seat designs, headliner, trunk, speaker, and vent placement? It just seems that with all the decisions that need to be made, it’s all too easy to make a few poor ones along the way. It is truly a learning experience. I’m not complaining. In fact, the process makes you realize that for better or worse, there will be no other Chevy out there exactly like yours!
