Sloane DePiero and Zach Donnarumma, members of the Ramsey High School Class of 2010, have been named winners of the prestigious Brian Piccolo Memorial Award. Each year, this award is presented to one female and one male Ramsey High School scholar-athlete of Italian ancestry who models the ideals of Brian Piccolo. The award is sponsored by the Greater Ramsey Chapter of UNICO International. This honor is named in memory of a courageous young man who was an inspiration for many though he died at the early age of 26 in 1970. Piccolo was a promising NFL player with the Chicago Bears who was a star at Wake Forest University. His battle with disease never dampened the spirit of this young man who was an inspiration to his family, teammates and friends. DePiero and Donnarumma were honored, along with other select Bergen County scholar-athletes, at the Brian Piccolo Award dinner. UNICO is a nationwide service organization which promotes Italian-American heritage and supports cultural, educational and community causes. DePiero will attend The College of New Jersey where she will be playing soccer. She is a four-year varsity starter at RHS. She has received honors at the league, county, and state levels, and is rated as the #7 player in all of New Jersey. She has competed on the Olympic Development Program State Team and on the Arsenal World Class U18s. She Attended Super Y League Olympic Development Program National Camp. Recently, she participated in the Kuban Spring Tournament in Sochi, Russia, where her team made it to the quarter finals against the Turkish national team. She is involved in the RHS Leadership program and peer mediation. Donnarumma will be attending Bowdoin College where he will play football. He was captain of the RHS team, which won North I Group II State Championship. He was named Athlete of the Week for his performance in the championship game, which featured four touchdowns and 269 yards rushing. He was named to the First Team AllCounty football team and earned varsity letters in track and basketball. He is a member of the National Honor Society and will graduate with a 3.9 GPA. He is a student government leader, a peer mediator, and co-founder of the youth action group, Outside the Box, which raised over $10,000 for the construction of a schoolhouse in a village in Sierra Leone, Africa.
