Mahwah
Voters choose DaPuzzo, Larson, Williams, and Speich
by Frank J. McMahon The voters of Mahwah have reelected three incumbent members of the township council and one former council member in last week’s municipal election. Incumbents John DaPuzzo, Roy Larson, and Harry Williams were reelected along with John Speich. Speich received the most votes, with a total of 1,800 of the 2,355 votes cast. He was followed by DaPuzzo, who received 1,442 votes; Williams, who received 1,377 votes; and Larson, who received 1,352 votes. Daniel Weixeldorfer, a new candidate for the township council, received 1,247 votes. Incumbent Councilman Allan Kidd received 1,202 votes. Speich, a former member of the council, received his greatest voter support from the polling places at Firehouse #1 at Franklin Turnpike and Miller Road and Firehouse #2 on Island Road. DaPuzzo, Williams, and Larson all received their largest tallies from the polling location at the Mahwah Ambulance Corps building on Franklin Turnpike. Weixeldorfer, who is a board member of the Ramapo Ridge II condominium association where he serves as that board’s treasurer, received his greatest voter support from the polling place on Lydia Lane, where the Ramapo Ridge and Birchwood Hills condominiums are located. Kidd received his largest voter support from the polling place at Firehouse #2 on Island Road. The 2,335 voters who participated in the election represented 16.2 percent of the 14,496 registered voters in the township. All the winning candidates were pleased with their election and they provided some insight on their focus over the next four years. Speich said one of the things he will focus on is ensuring that the township’s water supply is adequate. “Water will be the key,” he said. “If we don’t have the water, we can’t get the builders.” The said he would also concentrate on what can be done to bring taxes down. He said he advocates one-year contracts with the employee unions until the economy improves because that would be fair to the unions, the employees, and the township’s residents. “I think the mayor and council have done a great job so far, and I hope I can provide some of my expertise in budgeting and some independent thinking,” Speich added. DaPuzzo said he wants to hold Mahwah’s tax rate, which is the fifth lowest tax rate in the county and the fifteenth lowest tax rate in the state. He described the township as one of the most desirable communities in the state and he said he wants to maintain property values so they are greater than any other town in Bergen County. Williams said he was thrilled to be elected for the first time and he said the low turnout indicates that the residents are generally pleased. “I think it is a positive statement about the town and a positive statement about how the people feel about the town,” he said. He acknowledged that the tax issue is the main one he heard about in the campaign. “We really have to find ways to keep taxes from rising any further. I think that’s really a difficult job but (continued on page 23)
