Mahwah election
(continued from page 4) that’s where our focus has to be. That’s our toughest assignment in the next four years, to keep taxes from rising any further then they have already.” Larson said he was relieved the campaign was over and he looked forward to serving Mahwah for the next four years. He agreed that finances will be the issue over the next four years. “With what is happening on the state, county, and local levels, we’re going to have to look for ways to save money, and one of them is to look harder at regionalization of different services,” he said. He explained there are several surrounding towns in similar circumstances. “Rather than cede any power to the county, we need to start talking to our neighboring towns to try and figure out ways to economically share services,” he added. Mayor Richard Martel said he was pleased with the results of the election. “These are the four candidates I endorsed, and all the hard work was worth it, so I’m very happy with the results,” he commented. Weixeldorfer, who lost his bid for election by 105 votes, said he was very proud of his campaign team and he thanked all of his supporters in the Ramapo Ridge and Birchwood Hills condominiums who provided the largest turnout of all 14 voting districts, with 32.5 percent of those registered voters coming to the polls. He wished all the winning candidates the best of luck while confirming that he plans seek election to the council again in two years. Meanwhile, he said he is willing to serve Mahwah in whatever capacity the township can use him. Kidd responded to the loss of his council seat, saying, “The Mahwah taxpayers lost the election, and now taxes are going up again for no reason other than the insatiable desire for the mayor and council to spend other peoples’ money, and the cycle of rubber-stamped tax-and-spend will continue with the new council.” Kidd said he was the only council member to stand up to those whom he claims rubber-stamped tax hikes and ridiculous spending. “It is just easier for the council to rubber-stamp the mayor’s proposed tax hikes and circle their wagons to defend the tax hikes than it is to command operational efficiency,” he said. He also lamented the fact that only 16.2 percent of the voters came out to vote. “Based upon that weak showing, all taxpayers in Mahwah are going to keep getting slammed with tax hikes that are just not needed,” he said.
