Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • May 12, 2010 Emmanuel asks... Can You Help? Our hat’s off to the Girls Scout Cadettes #17 from Wyckoff’s Eisenhower Middle School who donated five cases of Girl Scout cookies for distribution to ECF families. Help an ECF family: Marjorie was very perplexed when her six-year old daughter, Julianna, complained of nausea and dizziness. She really had not been eating much, which prompted a visit to the doctor’s office. Several trips to the pediatrician left them baffled, until some tests came back and they learned that Julianna had leukemia. Marjorie told us that this was the worst day of her life and that she just cried and cried. Marjorie is a single mom who had been getting by with the help of her parents and friends. The diagnosis was emotionally crushing and she needed 4-29-09her life reorganized to deal with many trips to help getting karen/janine the oncologist and to treatments, working things EmmanuelHelp3x.75(4-29-09) out with Julianna’s school, insurance problems, 3 xmanaging the dealing with health An ECF Caseworker .75 and crisis emotionally. quickly helped Marjorie and she was soon able to deal more effectively with what was in front of her, and with her overwhelming fear. Our volunteers began a monthly food delivery, Marjorie got connected to community resources, bills got paid, and insurance company problems were resolved. Marjorie tells us, “I am not out of the woods yet. We have many medical issues to deal with, but we’re able to meet the challenges and I do not feel all alone in this. Thank you so much for all of your help!” If you want to help us to continue to meet the many challenges this and many other families face, please contribute to the Family Financial Fund. Another big need: We are in need of a new good quality copy machine for the Northern Regional Center. Save our van: A few years back, we were able to acquire a van due to the generosity of a local church. Since then we have made countless deliveries of groceries and other items to families. Now we need your help to keep the van in operation (maintenance, licensing, gas, and oil). If you want to help by contributing or by organizing a fundraiser, please let us know. Help us to help others! Event news: Please attend our Wine & Art Night in Franklin Lakes at the Endless Vine on the new date, Tuesday, June 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. The suggested donation is $40, and we expect this event to sell out quickly. May is Mother’s Day Month at ECF. Please consider hosting an informal tea fundraiser in your home to honor ECF moms who shoulder quite a large load. The family Stroll-a-Thon is scheduled for Saturday, June 26 in Franklin Lakes starting at 9 a.m. Call us for details and to reserve your tickets to any of these fundraisers. The history of the Jersey Shore will be presented at the Mahwah Public Library on Wednesday, May 12 at 7 p.m. Kevin Woyce will discuss how the 127 miles of islands and beaches, once feared by sailors and considered worthless by landowners, became one of America’s favorite summer destinations. Woyce’s presentation will include the shore’s lighthouses and lifesaving stations, the state’s first resorts, and how railroads created the modern New Jersey Shore in the late nineteenth century. He will also highlight some of the people who left their mark on New Jersey’s coastal history, including James Bradley, Asbury Park’s founder; Atlantic City showman and pier builder John Lake Young; and real estate promoter James Laffery, who built one of the shore’s strangest landmarks, a 60 foot tall, tin-plated wooden elephant, to advertise housing lots south of Atlantic City. The lecture will last one hour and is accompanied by a slide show. A question and answer session and book signing will follow. This program is free. No tickets are necessary. Seats are on a first come basis. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Woyce to discuss the Jersey Shore Suspect (continued from page 3) County Jail awaiting trial. According to Batelli, the suspect had been lodged in the Somerset County Jail on burglary and theft charges after being arrested in Bernards Township on April 5. He was released from that jail on April 27 after posting bail. “It is our belief, based upon information we learned through the investigation, that the apprehension of this defendant most likely stopped what had the potential to be a rash of burglaries in the area,” Batelli said. “The apprehension was not the result of action of any one individual but rather several factors, including the alert observations of the first responding officers, the swift and cooperative assistance from the Ramsey Police Department, and the information that was previously supplied to us by the Bernards Township Police Department about (the suspect).” HOME HARDWARE Offers More WEBER® Grill Options Than Any Other Store We Carry The Entire Line Of WEBER® Grills From Standard Models To Premium Versions Not Available In Many Stores.
