The cast includes Lucas Black, Dennis Quaid, Charles S. Dutton, Tyrese Gibson, and Kate Walsh. Blu-ray extras include three featurettes. The film is also available on DVD. “Pulling John” (IndiePix) is probably the first feature-length documentary devoted to arm wrestling. John Brzenk has enjoyed a 25-year run as the undefeated arm wrestling champion of the world. At the age of 40, John ponders whether to retire on top or risk a loss to a younger, stronger opponent. Shot over four years, the film follows Brzenk, a living legend in the sport he helped popularize and an airline mechanic by day. The film travels across the globe. We meet 23-year-old Alexy Voevoda from Sochi, Russia, and 26-year-old Travis Bagent from Charleston, West Virginia, colorful individuals who have been raised on the legend of Brzenk. “Pulling John” culminates at the Zloty Tur Championship in Warsaw, where Bagent and Voevoda have the chance of their lives -- to defeat and dethrone the champ. This is a fascinating documentary -- the kind one rarely gets to see on the big or small screen. By focusing on Brzenk’s conflict about continuing to compete in arm wrestling competitions, the filmmakers draw us in. As a mechanic, he blends in with the masses, but as an arm wrestler, he is the best. We can see how the sport and his fame as champion are hard for Brzenk to leave behind. Extras include close to an hour’s worth of additional scenes, a “Pulling John” graphic comic, and director’s commentary.
