Area May 12, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 19 Jean Baker Wunder wins Volunteer of Year Award by John Koster Glen Rock’s Jean Baker Wunder, who has honored borough volunteers for many years with the annual Good Egg Award, will receive the Volunteer of the Year Award from the John A. Girgenti Civic League. “This year, we had dozens of wonderful nominees,” said State Senator John A. Girgenti. “The selection committee had a difficult time sorting through the many qualified volunteers, but those chosen truly represent the spirit of volunteerism that our civic league tries to promote. This year we have a special recognition award to be given to Passaic County Director of Veterans Services Thomas Miller.” The other winners are Barry Houston of Hawthorne, Philip Zofrea of North Haledon, Hilton Gonzalez of Haledon, Evelyn Acevedo-Sheats and Larry Rogers of Paterson, Anthony Bruno of Totowa, and Maria Emma Anderson of Prospect Park. Baker Wunder is the founding director of The Source, located in the old Glen Rock railroad station, which provides counseling and referrals to people with personal, family, drug, alcohol or short-term economic problems and attempts to match them to the various county, state, and national agencies that deal with these problems. She also joined a number of other Glen Rock civic and church leaders to help coordinate assistance to victim families of the World Trade Center terrorist attack. The Good Egg Award -- the trophy is an actual ostrich egg hand-painted by a professional artist -- honors a Glen Rock resident who has served as a volunteer in important community activities related to counseling, emergencies, and recreation. Each year, the winner is lured to the sport where the award is presented. Each year, the John A. Girgenti Civic League hosts a dinner to recognize outstanding volunteers from the 35th Legislative District.
