Breakfast to benefit baseball team On May 16, the Mahwah 12U Blue Travel Baseball Team will hold a breakfast at Chili’s, 900 Route 17 North, Ramsey from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $5 per person and include all the pancakes and bacon you can eat and all the coffee, tea, or juice you can drink. Proceeds will support the team’s fundraising efforts and help them get to Cooperstown. Boy Scouts host Pancake Breakfast Mahwah Boy Scout Troop 50’s 13th Annual Pancake Breakfast will be held on Memorial Day, Monday May 31, prior to the town parade. The breakfast will take place on the parade route at the Ramapo Reformed Church, 100 Island Road, from 7 to 11 a.m. The cost is $5 for adults; $3 for children ages five through 12. The breakfast is free for veterans and for children under five years old. The breakfast includes pancakes (all you can eat), coffee, tea, juice, and sausage. Call (201) 236-3967. Board of health to meet The Mahwah Board of Health will meet Tuesday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the municipal building, 475 Corporate Drive. Chamber celebrates Boy Scout Centennial The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Northern New Jersey Council of the Boy Scouts of America along with Ameriprise Financial, Inc. will host a Business Card Exchange on Tuesday, May 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Boy Scout Service Center, 25 Ramapo Valley Road, Oakland. The Boy Scouts of America is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The Mahwah Chamber’s Business Card Exchanges give members and anyone else in the area’s business community the chance to meet with others and develop ideas for growth for themselves and the community. Refreshments will be provided. The cost is $15 for Chamber members and $30 for non-members. Advance registration is required. Learn about schoolhouse, Trail Conference The Mahwah Museum will hold its May history lecture “Darlington Schoolhouse and the NY/NJ Trail Conference” on Thursday, May 20. Tours of the schoolhouse will begin at 7 p.m. The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in Marion Hall at Immaculate Conception Church, 900 Darlington Avenue.
In 2007, Mahwah and the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference became joint owners of the schoolhouse and restoration plans are in the works. Mahwah historian Carol Greene will explore the history and architecture of this 1891 building. There will also be a lecture on the history of the NY/NJ Trail Conference. Founded in 1920, this group partnered with the government and private landowners to create, protect, and maintain a network of 1,700 miles of hiking trails in the metropolitan area. Parking is available in the church parking lot. Admission is $3 per person; free for Mahwah Museum members. Rummage Sale planned Holy Cross Nursery School is holding a Rummage Sale on Saturday, May 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 125 Glasgow Terrace. Captain Bill Sheehan to speak Hackensack Riverkeeper Captain Bill Sheehan will offer “Discover Your Own Backyard: Recreational Opportunities in the Hackensack River Watershed” on Monday, May 17 at 7 p.m. at the Mahwah Library. Captain Sheehan, lifelong resident of the area, founded the Hackensack Riverkeeper in 1997, and serves as the organization’s executive director. His program will feature a virtual tour of the area that will highlight boating, hiking, birding, and the flora and fauna of the watershed. This program is free. No tickets are necessary. Seats are on a first come basis. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Miniature golf benefit slated The Young Professional Network of the Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce has planned a Miniature Golf Tournament/Networking Event for Thursday, May 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Paramus Golf Course. A portion of the profits from this event will be donated to The DACKKs Group, a Bergen County organization dedicated to helping the homeless make the transition to independent living. Tickets are $40 per person or $75 per two-person team. There are many sponsorship opportunities available for the event, including “Closest to the Pin,” “Hole-in-One” and “Lowest Individual Score.” To donate a door prize for the
event, or for more information, call (201) 529-5566 or visit www.Mahwah.com. Harlem tour planned Mahwah seniors are invited to the Harlem Living History Tour planned for Wednesday, May 12. The group will tour the Lenox Lounge, the historic Harlem night club that was the backdrop for many jazz legends such as Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. The tour will also include time at the National Jazz Museum and lunch at a local restaurant accompanied by live jazz. After lunch, the motor coach will take the group to the sites of the Cotton Club, Savoy Ballroom, Apollo Theater, Smalls Paradise, Count Basie’s Club, and Connie’s Inn. The tour will continue at Sugar Hill to see Duke’s Place and find out the story behind Duke Ellington’s theme song, “Take the A Train.” The trip will include the quaint Sylvan Terrace and the grounds of the Morris-Jumel Mansion, the site of an annual jazz festival. A guide will provide commentary on these famous venues and about the legendary tree of hope. The cost of this trip is $67 per person. Museum announces photo exhibit The Mahwah Museum is offering a new photograph exhibit in the Lee Vold Gallery of Contemporary Photography. The exhibit features photos taken by Vold during various performances of the Small Town and Fancy Players, a Mahwah-based theater group. A reception celebrating the opening of this exhibit will be held at the Mahwah Museum on May 23. Summer camp registration begins Young World Day School and Camp, located at 585 Wyckoff Avenue in Mahwah, is accepting applications for summer camp for children ages three through seven, and for 2010-11 for those ages two through grade five. The YWDS summer camp features an air-conditioned building and an outdoor fenced-in campus for play. Daily swimming lessons are given by a Red Cross certified water safety instructor in an age appropriate, heated pool. Special events include weekly golf instruction.
