May 5, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 21 Mahwah Minutes Baseball team holds Plant Sale The Mahwah 12U Blue Travel Baseball Team will hold a Plant Sale on Saturday, May 8 at Continental Soldiers Field, Route 202 South, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The team will be selling flats, mixed hanging baskets, single pot plants, and floor planters just in time for Mother’s Day. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will support the Mahwah 12U Blue Travel Baseball Team’s fundraising efforts and help the team get to Cooperstown. Board of health to meet The Mahwah Board of Health will meet Tuesday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the municipal building, 475 Corporate Drive. Museum announces photo exhibit The Mahwah Museum is offering a new photograph exhibit in the Lee Vold Gallery of Contemporary Photography. The exhibit features photos taken by Vold during various performances of the Small Town and Fancy Players, a Mahwah-based theater group. A reception celebrating the opening of this exhibit will be held at the Mahwah Museum on May 23. Rummage Sale planned Holy Cross Nursery School is holding a Rummage Sale on Saturday, May 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 125 Glasgow Terrace. Program on Jersey Shore offered The history of the Jersey Shore will be presented at the Mahwah Public Library on Wednesday, May 12 at 7 p.m. Kevin Woyce will discuss how the 127 miles of islands and beaches, once feared by sailors and considered worthless by landowners, became one of America’s favorite summer destinations. Woyce’s presentation will include the shore’s lighthouses and lifesaving stations, the state’s first resorts, and how railroads created the modern New Jersey Shore in the late nineteenth century. He will also highlight some of the people who left their mark on New Jersey’s coastal history, including James Bradley, Asbury Park’s founder; Atlantic City showman and pier builder John Lake Young; and real estate promoter James Laffery, who built one of the shore’s strangest landmarks, a 60 foot tall, tin-plated wooden elephant, to advertise housing lots south of Atlantic City. The lecture will last one hour and is accompanied by a slide show. A question and answer session and book signing will follow. This program is free. No tickets are necessary. Summer camp registration begins Young World Day School and Camp, located at 585 Wyckoff Avenue in Mahwah, is accepting applications for summer camp for children ages three through seven, and for 2010-11 for those ages two through grade five. The YWDS summer camp features an air-conditioned building and an outdoor fenced-in campus for play. Daily swimming lessons are given by a Red Cross certified water safety instructor in an age appropriate, heated pool. Special events include weekly golf instruction. Captain Bill Sheehan to speak Hackensack Riverkeeper Captain Bill Sheehan will offer “Discover Your Own Backyard: Recreational Opportunities in the Hackensack River Watershed” on Monday, May 17 at 7 p.m. at the Mahwah Library. Captain Sheehan, lifelong resident of the area, founded the Hackensack Riverkeeper in 1997, and serves as the organization’s executive director. His program will feature a virtual tour of the area that will highlight boating, hiking, birding, and the flora and fauna of the watershed. This program is free. No tickets are necessary. Dinner and networking cruise offered The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Commerce and Industry of New Jersey, Meadowlands Regional Chamber, Newark Regional Business Partnership, and North Jersey Regional Chamber, will host a dinner and networking cruise on “The Spirit of New Jersey” on Wednesday, May 26. The ship will leave Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken at 6 p.m. and return to dock at 7:30 p.m. The event includes a dinner buffet, cash bar, DJ, and dancing. Free parking is included.
