Borough hosts ‘conversation’ with Governor Christie Heirloom tomato sale coming in May The Woman’s Club of Ramsey’s Seventh Annual Heirloom Tomato Transplant Sale has been scheduled for May 15. The sale will be held from 10 to 4 in the parking lot of the Masonic Lodge on the corner of Lake Street and Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey. This annual event is a fundraiser for the Woman’s Club of Ramsey and supports the group’s charitable work. Shoppers will find a large variety of heirloom tomato plants and a limited offering of some “Heritage Hybrid” varieties, the most famous of which is the Ramapo tomato. This variety was known as the true Jersey tomato 30 years ago and has not been commercially available for years. This will be the club’s fourth year growing the very popular Ramapo tomato. Farmer Rich will also be offering the Moreton variety, which also was a favorite Jersey tomato and is often referred to as the “Fourth of July” tomato. There will also be a great selection of herbs, eggplant, squash, cucumber, and pepper plants. These plants are grown by Susan and Richard Sisti of Catalpa Ridge Farm. The Sistis are now growing more than 90 varieties of heirloom tomato plants, which will be offered at the May sale. New varieties that will be introduced include Nyagous, Tami-G, State Fair, Tomato Berry, Tumbler, Bush Beefsteak, and Beauty (similar to Florida Ugly). Old standby varieties such as Pink & Yellow Brandywine, Rutgers, and Yellow Pear will continue to be offered. Pre-orders are encouraged; many varieties sellout early. Pre-order now and pick up the plants the day of the sale. Anyone who wishes to see the current varieties that will be available may visit www.jerseygrown.com for a complete listing and the ability to pre-order online. Shoppers may also phone Sue or Rich Sisti at (973) 209-4903 (between 6 and 8 p.m.) or e-mail jerseygrown@gmail.com to request an order form. Top: Governor Christie poses with some of the attendees.
