Six candidates file for four seats on council

McMahon Six candidates have filed nominating petitions and will be seeking election to the four seats that are available on the Mahwah Township Council in the May 11 non-partisan municipal election. The candidates include all four of the incumbent council members whose terms expire this year, one former council member, and one newcomer to the local political scene. The four incumbents are Council President John DaPuzzo; Allan Kidd, who is completing his first term on the council; Roy B. Larson, who is also completing his first term on the council; and Harry Williams, who was appointed to the council in January. The former council member is John A. Spiech, and the newcomer is Daniel J Weixeldorfer, who is a Realtor in the township. DaPuzzo is a graduate of Paramus High School and attended Fairleigh Dickinson University School of Engineering. He is a graduate Teterboro School of Aeronautics and of the Fairfield School of Business. He was the owner of McPeek’s Tire and Service in Ramsey from 1985 to 2005 and has been a managing partner of North Bergen Holdings in Mahwah. He is also the vice president of Squires Insurance Agency and the chief operating officer of The Fountain Spas. Da Puzzo’s volunteer service includes being a past president a member of the board of directors of the Bergen Highlands Rotary Club; chairman of Mahwah Day and Ramsey Day events; chairman of World Affairs Seminar; and advisor to the Mahwah and Ramsey High School Interact Clubs. He has also been a coach in the Mahwah Youth Sports Boosters organization and a Cub Scout leader for Pack 258. Kidd attained an MBA in finance from the Fordham University Graduate School of Business Administration after completing college with a degree in technology. In 1996, Kidd commenced legal studies at the Fordham University School of Law to fulfill a goal of starting a local law firm and practicing in Mahwah. At the same time, Kidd took a position with Cantor Fitzgerald, a financial firm on Wall Street, where he worked by day, while studying law at night. Upon completion of law school, Kidd practiced law in New York City for several years and then focused his attention on starting a local practice. Licensed to practice law in New York and New Jersey, Kidd primarily practices consumer and commercial law, and focuses on some niche aspects of telecommunications law. He claims to be the only life-long resident of Mahwah on the township council and his local roots span back a few hundred years. Larson has been a resident of the township since 1994. He holds BA in political science from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland and a JD Degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville, Virginia. A member of the American Bar Association, he is the senior counsel at the Xerox Corporation, which he joined in 1988. He specializes in mergers and acquisitions and other complex business transactions. He is a founding trustee of the Mahwah Schools Foundation. His volunteer work also includes coaching recreation soccer, basketball, baseball, and club soccer, and being an assistant coach on the Mahwah U13 travel baseball team. Spiech served on the council from 1997 to 2004, and served as council president from 1999 to 2003. A life-long resident of the township, he is a retired senior auto-
motive executive who was the president of Ferrari North America and the owner and president of Lotus Performance Cars. In 1963, Spiech became the first fire inspector. He has been a volunteer firefighter for 49 years. Spiech was one of the founders of Boy Scout Troop 258 serving as committee chairman and as Scoutmaster. He has served, or is currently serving, on several town boards and commissions, including the township’s planning board, the environmental commission, the Mahwah Green (continued on page 4)
