Set in 1960s England, the film focuses on Jenny (Mulligan), an intelligent young school girl who is disenchanted with the mundane, middle-class existence that might lie ahead for her. She longs for adulthood and a chance to experience more of life. She meets David (Sarsgaard), an attractive older man, who introduces her to his world of glamorous friends, chic jazz clubs, and her own sexual awakening. What might have been a routine coming-of-age story turns out to be far more, primarily because of the excellent cast, including Cara Seymour as Jenny’s mother, Molina as her uninspiring father, and Thompson as a teacher who is challenged by Jenny’s misgivings about the curriculum she and her peers have to master to move on in life. The film’s primary conflict is whether Jenny should further her education or continue to enjoy a perceived exciting life in David’s shadow. Mulligan, a fresh face to movies, rightfully earned a Best Actress nomination. Blu-ray and DVD extras include deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, “Walking the Red Carpet,” and commentary with director Lone Scherfig and actors Mulligan and Sarsgaard. “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” (Summit Entertainment), the sequel to “Twilight,” is no masterpiece, but is more fun than the first picture. The strange romance between Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) continues as Bella remains drawn to Edward, but he pushes her away because he doesn’t want to turn her into a vampire. His reason is never made clear. Complications arise when Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner, muscled up considerably since the first “Twilight”) becomes the third part of a romantic triangle as the shirtless wolf boy. Jacob is easily the focus in “New Moon” as Edward disappears for a good portion of the movie, allowing Lautner to make quite an impression. He has the intensity and good looks to become a major star. Despite gorgeous cinematography of the Pacific Northwest, the story is one of simple teenage angst, sexual desire, and abstinence, with the vampire/werewolf gimmick to provide an infusion of “horror-lite.” The special effects are pretty bad, as normal-sized humans transform into ridiculously huge wolves. Given the industry’s advances in computer generated images, one can only assume more affordable (and less realistic) effects were selected over more believable, costly ones. “New Moon” is enjoyable, if only because it takes itself so seriously. By avoiding lighter moments, director Chris Weitz has fashioned a glossy, self-conscious B movie. Bluray/DVD extras include director audio commentary, a sixpart behind-the-scenes documentary, and music videos. “The Baader Meinhof Complex” (MPI Home Video) takes place in Germany in the early 1970s, just as West Germany began to see the foundations of its still-young post-war democracy shaken by a group of self-described communists and urban guerrillas who called themselves the Red Army Faction. These children of the World War II generation lashed out at what they deemed to be the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment, many of whom had a Nazi past. Through a series of kidnappings, assassinations, and bombings, the Red Army Faction -- called the BaaderMeinhof Group in the media, after the names of two of its leaders -- kept West Germany in a state of terror for years. This thriller/docudrama traces the planning of the group’s plots and its eventual capture, imprisonment, and trial, during which some of its members start going mad. Bruno Ganz stars as the head of the German police, who seems genuinely confused by the movement’s angst. The two-disc special edition contains a documentary on the historical background of the movement, an interview with the author of the book on which the film is based, a featurette on actors and their roles, and a making-of short. Timed to capitalize on next week’s big-screen release of the remake of “Clash of the Titans” is “Clash of the Gods: The Complete Season One” (A&E Home Entertainment). Containing documentaries based on legend, myth, and literature, this set includes the episodes “Zeus,” “Hercules,” “Hades,” “The Minotaur,” “Medusa,” “Thor,” “Tolkien’s Monsters,” “Odysseus,” and “Beowulf.” The episodes connect ancient myths to actual historical events, events in the Bible, and other cultures’ mythologies. To enliven the presentations, computer generated images have been incorporated. Available in Blu-ray and DVD, “Clash of the Gods” contains no extras.
