Churches walk in Jesus’ footsteps On Friday, April 2, beginning at noon, the Allendale Community of Churches invites the public to its annual Good Friday Worship Service, “The Way of the Christ’s Passion” Devotional Walk. This year’s walk will begin at Guardian Angel Roman Catholic Church, 320 Franklin Turnpike, and end in the sanctuary of Archer United Methodist Church, 37 East Allendale Avenue. Participating churches include Archer United Methodist, Calvary Lutheran, Guardian Angel, Highlands Presbyterian,
The Plant, and Trinity Episcopal. The members of Zion Lutheran Church in Saddle River will also share in this event. Patterned after the Stations of the Cross, a procession of people, led by a large, roughly hewn cross, will follow a prescribed route through the middle of Allendale. Along the route, the procession will stop at 14 different locations or “stations” for scripture reading and prayer. Many of the lay readers and leaders of this event are youth from each congregation. These 14 stations will recall the events of Christ’s suffering and death and their contemporary implications. At the last station, a monetary offering will be accepted on behalf of the Center for Food Action. People of all ages are welcome to participate in this community spiritual event. First Presbyterian sets services Ramsey First Presbyterian Church has set special services for Holy Week and Easter. On Maundy Thursday, April 1, the service will include the Holy Eucharist and foot-washing enactment. This service will take place in the chapel at 8 p.m. On Good Friday, April 2, beginning at noon, there will be a meditative labyrinth featuring Jesus’ last hours on earth. The chapel will be open for prayer. At 8 p.m., a service of scripture, a cappella voices, and reflection with focus on “Seven Last Words and Tenebrae of Lights” will be held in the chapel. On Easter Sunday, April 4, services will be held at 9 and 11 a.m. Special music will include a brass quartet, Chancel Choir, and organ. Selections will include movements from Handel’s “Messiah” and festival procession. Dr. Deborah King is music director. The church is located at 15 Shuart Lane in Ramsey.
