March 31, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 11 Ramsey Review Help ‘Strike Out Hunger’ Saint John’s Memorial Episcopal Church, located on the corner of Franklin Turnpike and Main Street, and the Ramsey Baseball/Softball Association have joined forces to “Strike Out Hunger.” League participants are encouraged to bring nonperishable foods to the Finch Park snack stand on April 17, opening day for the Ramsey softball/ baseball season. All food items will be donated to local food pantries. Kid friendly donation items suggested are pasta and pasta sauce, boxed macaroni and cheese, soups, baked beans, canned fruit, boxed potatoes, pancake mix and syrup, coffee, jelly, 100% fruit juice (bottles or boxes), cereal, and healthy individual snack items for lunch boxes, plus toothpaste and toothbrushes. Saint John’s goal is to surpass the 2009 collection, which netted over 8,000 cans of food. WPU announces Dean’s List William Paterson University in Wayne has named the following Ramsey students to the Dean’s List for the fall 2009 semester: Nicole Adair, Harrison Bieth, Jessica McPeek, Mary O’Connor, Caitlin Siciliano, and Erin Sterbinsky. In order to qualify for the Dean’s List, a student must carry a minimum of 12 credits for the semester and earn a grade point average of 3.45 or better. Seniors plan events Ramsey’s seniors have planned a bus trip to the United Nations for Monday, April 26. Signup will begin Thursday, April 1 at 10 a.m. in Ramsey Borough Hall. The cost is $65 per person. Checks should be made payable to the Ramsey Senior Center. While at the UN, seniors will visit the Delegates Dining Room, which serves some of the finest cuisine in New York City. Chef Daryl Schembeck brings his years of experience from the Culinary Institute to the United Nations and prepares lunch for UN ambassadors, heads of state, staff members, and the general public on a daily basis. Enjoy a lunch buffet and world class service while taking in the 180 degree views of the East River. Following lunch, there will be a guided tour of the United Nations. Attendees should note that this trip includes a considerable amount of walking. Bocce for men will begin on Monday, April 5. This group meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1 p.m. All Ramsey seniors are welcome. Last year, the group competed with bocce players from other towns. The spring session of yoga will begin on Friday, April 9 at 9:50 a.m. Space is limited, and signup is required in advance at borough hall. There is a $10 charge for the eightweek session. Project Healthy Bones to begin Orientation for Project Healthy Bones, a new initiative sponsored by the Ramsey Board of Health and Hackensack University Medical Center’s Health Awareness Regional Program, will be held April 13. The program will be held at 10 a.m. at the Ramsey Senior Center at Finch Park. This 24-week exercise and educational program is designed for older adults who have osteoporosis or are at risk for osteoporosis. Exercises are targeted to improve strength, balance, and flexibility. The educational component stresses the importance of exercise, nutrition, safety, drug therapy, and lifestyle factors related to osteoporosis. Classes will be conducted by professionals from Hackensack University Medical Center’s HARP program. Registration is required and will take place during the orientation. Project Healthy Bones classes are free, but space is limited. Future classes will be held at the Senior Center on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. Sergeants’ retirement dinner scheduled Ramsey PBA Local #155 will host a May 11 retirement dinner for former police sergeants John McIntyre and Christopher Riedel, both of whom retired last year. The 7 p.m. event will be held at Seasons Banquet Restaurant, 644 Pascack Road, Washington Township. Tickets are $45; call (201) 788-7441. Breakfast supports band, color guard A Pancake Breakfast to benefit the Ramsey High School Band and Color Guard programs will be hosted by Chili’s, Route 17, Ramsey on Saturday, April 17, from 7 to 10:30 a.m. Breakfast is $5 per person and will include all-youcan-eat pancakes, bacon, coffee, juice, and milk. All proceeds support the RHS Band and Guard activities, including the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Winter Percussion, and Velocity Guard. Hoagie Sale to begin Members of the Ramsey High School Big Blue Marching Band and Color Guard will be ringing doorbells Wednesday, March 31 through Sunday, April 18 to take orders for the Annual Spring Hoagie Sale. Hoagies will be delivered on Saturday, April 24. Proceeds from this sale help the band and color guard travel to various competitions. Donations will be graciously accepted. Ready, Set, Relax! Ready, Set, Relax! -- a community initiative designed to raise awareness about the impact of over-scheduling - is scheduled for Wednesday, March 31. Ramsey Mayor Christopher Botta and the Ramsey Youth Council encourage residents to take the night off, and have families slow down, spend time together, and think about how they can better balance family time, unscheduled time, and outside enrichment activities. In some cases, burglars remove a pillowcase and dump the contents of jewelry boxes into the empty pillow cases without discerning the value. By separating and hiding your good jewelry, will drastically decrease the possibility of losing a piece of jewelry with monetary value. If you are going to be away from your home for a protracted period of time, notify the Ramsey Police Department at (201) 327-2400 to be put on the “Vacant House List.” Make arrangements to stop newspaper deliveries and stop mail delivery, or have a trusted neighbor pick up these items daily. If a resident sees any suspicious cars or people in their neighborhood, contact the Ramsey Police Department immediately. Residents know the people in their neighborhood. If something or someone looks suspicious, call the police right away. Astute observations by residents have assisted in solving many crimes.
