Mahwah March 24, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 9 Salary ordinance introduced by Frank J. McMahon The Mahwah Council has introduced the 2010 salary ordinance for the township’s white and blue collar employees, the police department, the paid employees in the fire division, the mayor and council, and the administration. The ordinance will be retroactive to Jan. 1 once it is adopted by the council. However, the payment of the increases will not occur until the township’s budget is adopted in April. The salary ordinance, which was scheduled to be adopted at the council’s public meeting last week, reflects a two percent increase in the salaries for most white collar employees according to their three-year contract, a 3.5 percent increase for blue collar employees as per their current three-year contract, and a four percent salary increase for the police department according to the Policemen’s Benevolent Association’s four-year contract. All of these multiyear contracts are currently in their final year. The ordinance includes part time and hourly rates of compensation for various administrative and executive positions, seasonal positions in the department of public works and the municipal pool, the department of police, recreation, the department of inspections, and the municipal court. The ordinance lists the minimum and maximum salary ranges for the mayor and council, the township clerk’s office, and the employee positions in all the departments of the township. The ordinance contains no increase, however, for the mayor’s annual salary or the other elected members of the council. Business Administrator Brian Campion explained that minimum and maximum salary levels are used for each full time position because some positions have employees at different salary levels, or steps in the pay grade due to length of service. The ranges also provide the township with the opportunity to replace employees with new indi- viduals who may be paid at a lower salary. According to the 2010 salary ordinance, the mayor receives an annual salary of $15,000, the council president receives $8,000, and council members receive $7,000 each. The minimum and maximum salary ranges for some other positions listed in the ordinance include: township clerk, $48,000 to $66,214; deputy township clerk, $47,004 to $54,837; principal clerk, $31,335 to $39,170; business administrator, $90,000 to $168,096; administrative assistant, $54,837 to $64,238; executive secretary, $47,004 to $61,104; chief financial officer, $60,000 to $115,529; assistant to the CFO, $47,004 to $61,004; tax collector, $48,000 to $66,235; deputy tax collector, $47,004 to $53,270; and tax assessor, $48,000 to $97,700.
