Fire and building fees to rise in township
by Frank J. McMahon Two ordinances adopted by the Mahwah Township Council will raise fire prevention and building and housing fees. The ordinances update the schedule of fees charged for these services pursuant to the township’s enforcement of the state’s Uniform Fire Safety Act and the township’s building and housing codes. One ordinance pertains to the fire prevention fees that are in addition to the inspection fees required by the Uniform Fire Safety Act and the regulations of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. The fire prevention inspections and fees that will be required under this ordinance will be for each building, and each use within each building, in the case of a multi-use facility. Some of the fees in that ordinance include: fees ranging from $95 to $350 for business buildings with gross floor areas of up to 6,000 square feet to over 35,000 square feet; $125 for up to 12,000 square feet of a factory, industrial, or storage building; between $60 and $180 for mercantile buildings from under 5,000 square feet to over 10,000 square feet. The fee for a certificate of smoke detector installation is now $80, and the fees for buildings or tenant areas that are not occupied are between $50 and $3,000 for buildings that range from up to 6,000 square feet and over 75,001 square feet. A late fee of $100 will be charged if the fees are not
paid within 60 days of notification, but board of education buildings, municipal libraries, and buildings owned by the township are exempt from the fees. The second ordinance pertains to fees related to the township’s building and housing codes. The fee for a construction permit will be the sum of the subcode fees plus all applicable special fees in this ordinance, which will be imposed as required by the state’s Uniform Construction Code regulations. Fees in this ordinance include a minimum of $500 for a principal building and $200 for an accessory building; and $30 per $1,000 of estimated cost of renovations, alterations, and repairs.
