Mahwah
School board incumbents will run unopposed
by Frank J. McMahon The three incumbent members of the Mahwah Board of Education whose terms expire this year will run unopposed in the April 20 election. Suzanne Curry, Douglas D’Angelo, and Charles “Chuck” Saldarini were the only candidates to file nominating petitions by the March 1 deadline. Curry has been a resident of Mahwah for 13 years and is a lifelong resident of Bergen County. She has two teens in the school district. She received a BA with honors from Rutgers College in 1984, where she was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. A member of the Mahwah Chamber of Commerce, she is a self-employed public relations consultant. Curry was elected to the Mahwah Board of Education three years ago and is seeking her second term on the board. She serves on the board’s Public Relations Committee and has been its chairman for two years. She was also on the board’s Instructional Committee for three years and has been its chairman for one year, and she has been on the Policy Committee for two years. In addition, she has been a Bergen County School Boards Representative for two years. A trustee of the Mahwah Schools Foundation for seven years, she has been the school board’s liaison to the foundation for two years, and she has been the editor and consulting editor of the foundation’s magazine for four years. She was the president of the Betsy Ross School Home and School Organization in 2006 and its vice president in 2004 and she was the secretary of the Joyce Kilmer Home and School Organization in 2007. Curry has worked on or chaired various committees in all the Mahwah schools. She chaired the Public Relations Committee, and the Science Day and Pie & Cookie sales. She was on the Cooperstown Fundraising Committee for the Mahwah Travel Baseball Program and she has been active in the community group responsible for helping to enact the 500 foot separation ordinance from schools and the Ridge Road weight limit ordinance. D’Angelo is a 1981 graduate of Mahwah High School and is a long-time resident of Mahwah. He has two children in the township school system and is seeking election to his third term on the school board, where he has been the chair of the Policy Committee and has served as a member on the Teachers’ Negotiations Contract Committee. He is a graduate of Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire where he received a bachelor’s degree in computer science. He also graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken with a master’s degree in computer science management. He is employed by the Microsoft Corporation, where he provides consulting services to customers. He has been a member of the Mahwah Environmental Committee, a soccer coach with the Mahwah Boosters for the past 11 years, and has participated in the Multiple Sclerosis Bike-a-thon in New York City for 15 years. Saldarini has been a Mahwah resident since 1973 and is seeking his second term on the school board. He has two children who are both in the Mahwah schools. A 1981 graduate of Mahwah High School, he is also a 1985 cum laude graduate of Syracuse University with an AB in political science from Maxwell School of Citizenship. He also earned a minor in telecommunications management from the Newhouse School of Communication. He is currently the chairman of the Mahwah Republican County Committee. Saldarini is a member of the Mahwah Municipal Alliance, an organization dedicated to helping the youth of Mahwah make great decisions. In the past, he has been a Mahwah youth sports coach working with both boys and girls in baseball, softball, and basketball. He is a member of advisory board to the Ramapo College of New Jersey Anisfield School of Business. That board provides input into the business school’s programs and goals in order to ensure that students possess skills which are relevant to today’s business climate. Currently the chief executive officer of Sentrx, a company that provides drug safety services, he is the founder of The Charles T. Saldarini Group, which evaluates and incubates startup companies in both pharmaceutical product development and health care services. He also previously led another company’s development from a concept stage through its maturity as a publicly traded company.
