School restoration project earns Heritage Award
by Frank J. McMahon The Mahwah Historic Preservation Commission has awarded its annual Heritage Award to the Bailey family, owners and administrators of the Apple Montessori School located in the former Commodore Perry School building at Island Road and East Ramapo Avenue. Barbara Shanley, chair of the Historic Preservation Commission, made the presentation at a recent township council meeting along with Mayor Richard Martel. “Each year, the Historic Preservation Commission recognizes with a Heritage Award the work of property owners in the township for acts of preservation or restoration of architecturally or historically significant structures, sites, or artifacts,” Shanley said. She noted that the award was being given in two categories: the restoration or preservation of one of Mahwah’s historic sites, and the adaptive re-use of a historic site. Shanley referred to the Bischoff & Kahn history book of Mahwah, “From Pioneer Settlement to Suburb: A History of Mahwah NJ, 1700 to 1976,” which recounted that the board of education in 1904 realized the current two-room schoolhouse on the Ramapo Reformed Church property was inadequate. The property at the corner of Island Road and East Ramapo Avenue was purchased for $1,200, and the Mahwah School, also known as School #2, which later became the Commodore Perry School, was built. In 1907, the school needed only two teachers. Three years later, it needed five teachers and, in 1912, due to overcrowding, this school building had its first of several expansions. By 1927, Shanley said the school had over 400 students. During the 2001-02 school year, Shanley said the board of education passed a resolution voting to close the Commodore Perry School at the end of that year because it determined that the school building was no long suitable, convenient, or adequate for the education of the children of Mahwah, and was no longer needed for school purposes. Shanley noted that the growth of the township and (continued on page 8)
