Ramsey
The Ramsey Municipal Alliance Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse recently launched “In Control,” a program that encourages students who are about to enter high school to remain in charge of their own futures. “We launched this program at Smith Middle School as a result of watching the trends in town which have been showing us that graduating eighth graders are an at risk group for alcohol and drug experimentation,” said Susan Major, coordinator for the alliance. “They graduate from the eighth grade and are struggling with not being sure how to ‘fit in’ in high school. At the same, time many find themselves exposed to parties and gatherings during the summer where some of them will sneak alcohol and convince their friends to try it. We provided the eighth graders with red livestrong type wristbands that we designed with the words ‘In Control’ in bold black letters. Wearing (the wristbands) means that these kids have decided to stay in control of their own minds and bodies and are not will-

ing to turn that control over to alcohol and drugs. It tells their weaker friends that may be making poor choices that they don’t want their input if that input includes trying to convince them to give that control up. It empowers them to control their own space and the wristbands give them a visible way to show support for each other and also kids across the country who are making the choice to keep their control.” The wristband idea came from a round table discussion held at one of the alliance’s meetings. Major said, “I approached Richard Wiener, principal of Eric S. Smith Middle School, and he was very supportive. He asked us to meet with his student leadership council to discuss the idea. I was very moved by how great of a concern these kids had about this issue. They are on the inside, they see what’s happening to some of their friends and peers, and they really care. They were very happy that we sought them (continued on page 15)
