Vacation Bible School set Holy Cross Lutheran Church at 125 Glasgow Terrace in Mahwah will hold its Vacation Bible School July 12 through 16. Children will learn about the “Fruits of the Spirit: Growing Love, Sprouting Joy, Planting Peace, Producing Patience, and Picking Kindness.” Vacation Bible School will begin with a light dinner at 5:30 p.m. and run until 8 p.m. The program will include farm fresh songs, crafts, Bible stories, and games. Vacation Bible School is free to the community for all children four years old through fourth grade. Early registration is encouraged. Call (201) 529-2117 to register. Nouwen book to be discussed “Not by Bread Alone,” a spiritual book discussion group, will discuss “Making All Things New: An Invitation to the Spiritual Life” by Henri Nouwen on July 11 from 5 to 6 p.m. The group meets at Panera Bread, 1300 State Route 17 in Ramsey. Nouwen’s book explores how to begin finding the peace of mind to hear the voice of God. He acknowledges that worry is so ingrained in many people’s daily lives that it seems to be an integral part of positive achievement and self-protection. He explains the destructive effects of “busy-ness” and its attendant habit of worrying, then shows how Jesus responds to these worries, and finally describes some disciplines that “can cause our worries slowly to lose their grip on us, and which can thus allow the Spirit of God to do his recreating work.” “Not by Bread Alone” is sponsored by the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Mahwah. For information, contact Jennifer at (201) 327-1276 or paicc@yahoo.com. In many cases, the working parents in these families are unable to afford child care or provide any recreational opportunities to their children when school is out. For over 40 years, SSA has provided camperships for boys and girls who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend day camp. SSA provides basic supplemental financial assistance and case management services to individuals in Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus, Midland Park, Waldwick, and Wyckoff. Donations to send children to camp may be sent to the Social Service Association, 6 Station Plaza, Ridgewood, NJ 07450. Volunteers needed for Doula program Valley Home Care is recruiting volunteers to join its End of Life Doula Program. Doulas provide emotional, physical, and spiritual support to people who are dying and their loved ones. The volunteers will be trained to work in shifts to help families deal with the around-the-clock demands for care as death approaches. The next training sessions will be held on July 22, 23, 26, and 29, and Aug. 5 from 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, July 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To enroll, contact Maria Salerno at (201) 291-6246 or Henry Fersko-Weiss at (201) 291-6243.
