Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • June 16, 2010 Ramsey Renovations are still underway at the Ramsey Public Library’s location on Wyckoff Avenue, and officials are still anticipating that the project, which began last fall, will be a year-long endeavor. While the library’s staff is awaiting the word that the work is complete, local agencies have reached out to offer sites for the summer programs. In addition to hosting summer activities for children and adults at the library’s temporary location at 171 Lake Street, Ramsey Library Director Wendy Bloom recently reported that the Masonic Lodge on Franklin turnpike and the Ramsey Rescue Community Center on South Island Road (across from Ramsey High School) would help host some upcoming shows. In addition, Bloom said, story times would be offered at the Ramsey Municipal Pool and at the Ramsey Golf and Country Club’s pool facility. “We are so grateful to these local agencies for their generosity,” Bloom told Villadom TIMES last week. “We’re being very creative. We just hope Mother Nature cooperates,” she said of the outdoor programs. This summer’s reading program for children is called “Make a Splash: Read!” Activities are offered for younger children and teens. The adult companion program is called “Water Your Mind.” Last year, the Ramsey Council awarded the contract for the library renovations to Aark Contractors, Inc. of Spring Valley, New York. The contract, which was awarded in the amount of $2,548,900, includes the base bid and multiple alternates. Alternates include exterior paint, a fire pump, a hand dryer, an electrical service update, a soffit lighting update for the eaves on the exterior of the build- Local agencies aid library with summer program sites ing, and repaving of the part of the parking lot that will be impacted by the construction. The project is being funded by a $4,250,000 bond ordinance. The library building, which is approximately four decades old, will remain a 14,000 square foot structure, but the interior space is being reconfigured to enhance efficiency in terms of energy consumption and use of space. The project includes the replacement of all the building’s windows and doors, and the replacement of the heating and air conditioning system with equipment intended to save energy and space. The project includes redesigned areas for children and teens, comfortable reading spaces for adults, and room for wireless computing. Both library entrances are being reconfigured to meet at a central circulation desk, and the information service desk will be near the main entrance. New popular books and media will fill the open atrium of the library, while book stacks will be located along the sides of the building. A glass enclosed reading room will highlight the Wyckoff Avenue view. The program room will be updated, opening directly into the children’s area for easy access to story times and crafts. Restrooms will be expanded to meet ADA requirements. Ramsey library staff members closed the Wyckoff Avenue building and moved into temporary quarters at the Pavilion building at 171 Lake Street (near Route 17) last summer. The operation opened to the public on Sept. 14. In the temporary location, library personnel are able to provide computers and some books and media for patrons of all ages. Most of Ramsey’s collection is in storage, but library staffers are borrowing items for patrons from other BCCLS libraries. Patrons must have their library cards with them when visiting other BCCLS libraries, or they will not be able to borrow items. The libraries in Allendale, Franklin Lakes, Mahwah, Upper Saddle River, and Wyckoff are supporting Ramsey during the renovation. Call (201) 327-1445 for additional information.
