All of this comes off perfectly and merited a long ovation from the opening night audience. The “Ugg-A-Wugg” number is one of the most imaginatively and excitingly mounted dance sequences I’ve seen on a professional stage in a long time. It is definitely a show stopper. Flying is, and has always been, integral to productions of “Peter Pan.” The firm ZFX is credited in the program with the wire work. The play was written so that, at key points, actors could slip behind objects in order to have wires hooked on or unhooked from their harnesses either just before or after flying sequences. When done right, and it certainly was done right at the Paper Mill, the flying sequences are exhilarating. Remember, it’s not only the flying, but the costumes, music, lighting, and enthusiasm of the actors that sell the scene, even though the audience can clearly see the wires. “Peter Pan” is truly a family show and is sure to captivate young viewers. The fast pace, musical numbers, comic characters, and theatrical effects make it a show kids and their parents will love. “Peter Pan” will run through June 27 at the Paper Mill Playhouse. Performances are Wednesdays at 7 p.m., Thursdays at 1:30 and 7 p.m., Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 1:30 and 7 p.m., and Sundays at 1:30 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $92 and may be purchased by calling (973) 376-4343, online at www.papermill.org, or at the Paper Mill Playhouse box office on Brookside Drive in Millburn. Sills is a less flamboyant Hook, and that hurts his performance. This is a case where more is better than less. Though Sills has a wonderful voice and stage presence, he squanders the role’s potential laughs. Sills has done Broadway and been fine, particularly in “The Scarlet Pimpernel,” but comedy is not every actor’s forte. Here, he fails to bring Hook to proper comic life. Director Mark S. Hoebee has kept the action brisk and created a smooth-flowing show filled with a sense of magic. There has always been an undertext of the bittersweet to “Peter Pan,” and Hoebee allows the audience to keep in mind the basic conflict of a boy who doesn’t want to grow up and be like everyone else. But he makes Neverland look like a great place to visit, much like Oz, despite its occasional unpleasantness. Though the score of “Peter Pan” does not achieve the caliber of a “Carousel” or “My Fair Lady,” it is tuneful and varied, with ballads (“Neverland”), a lullaby (“Tender Shepherd”), choral numbers (“Pirate Song,” “Wendy”), an assertive ensemble piece (“I Won’t Grow Up”), several solo turns for Hook, and a dynamite dance number featuring practically the entire cast (“Ugg-A-Wugg”). This number opens the Second Act and is simply a dazzler.
