Nouwen book to be discussed “Not by Bread Alone,” a spiritual book discussion group, will discuss “Making All Things New: An Invitation to the Spiritual Life” by Henri Nouwen on July 11 from 5 to 6 p.m. The group meets at Panera Bread, 1300 State Route 17 in Ramsey. Nouwen’s book explores how to begin finding the peace of mind to hear the voice of God. He acknowledges that worry is so ingrained in many people’s daily lives that it seems to be an integral part of positive achievement and self-protection. He explains the destructive effects of “busyness” and its attendant habit of worrying, then shows how Jesus responds to these worries, and finally describes some disciplines that “can cause our worries slowly to lose their grip on us, and which can thus allow the Spirit of God to do his recreating work.” “Not by Bread Alone” is sponsored by the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Mahwah. Music festival begins 12th season Pianist Julian Lampert will open the 12th season of the Mahwah Library’s Summer Music Festival with music by Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and a composition of his own on Tuesday June 15 at 7 p.m. Lampert’s activities as a concert pianist and composer of different genres make him one of the most versatile artists performing today. In 1996, he was honored by the Scriabin Society of Moscow by being selected to inaugurate a festival of Scriabin’s music for the 125th anniversary of the composer’s birth -- performing on Scriabin’s piano. Since 1999, Lampert has been engaged as composer by Ludmila and Oleg Protopopov, two-time Olympic gold medalists in figure skating. They danced to his music during their return to Russia in 2005 for the first time since their defection. Lampert has also been engaged to perform at the Chopin Festival held at the Hall of The Kosciusko Foundation in New York City. He is currently working on an album with New York Jazz Records. In 2009, Lampert collaborated with The Sheba Ensemble, which premiered his latest compositions at The Schimmel Center for Performing Arts at Pace University, and The New York Society for Ethical Culture. The concert is free. Seats are on a “first come” basis. Latecomers will be admitted at the first convenient break. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Call (201) 529READ for details.

(continued from page 8) out of work, they could use gift certificates to any chain grocery or department store. Our case worker is helping them find alternate resources, but your help is still needed. They have requested summer clothes for Bobby (adult size medium Tshirts). Bobby also likes board games of all types. We are able to make a difference with families like Bobby’s with your contribution to the Family Financial Assistance Program. With your continued donations of food and your financial support, ECF will continue to meet the needs of families like Bobby’s who might even be neighbors of yours. Please consider helping. We are also in need of a new, good quality copy machine for the Northern Regional Center. Save our van: A few years back, we were able to acquire a van due to the generosity of a local church. Since then, we have used the van to make countless deliveries of groceries and other items to ECF families. Now we need your help to keep the van in operation (maintenance, licensing, gas, and oil). If you want to help by contributing or by organizing a fundraiser, please let us know. Help us to help others! Event news: Please attend our Wine & Art Night in Franklin Lakes at the Endless Vine on the new date, Tuesday, June 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. The suggested donation is $40, and we expect this event to sell out quickly. The family Stroll-a-Thon will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 26 in Franklin Lakes. Call us for details and to reserve your tickets. To help: Volunteers are welcome to assist in the Regional Center as follows: Tuesday, 10 to 1; Wednesday and Friday, 10 to 5; Thursday, 2:30 to 5; and Saturday, 10 to 1.
