Page 14 THE VILLADOM TIMES Alliance’s “Historic Structure Report”, completed by a consultant hired by the WCA at a cost of $17,000. “The difficult part is trying to convince them that we are not a municipality or a corporation with deep pockets; we are a non-profit organization that has been working our fingers to the bone to improve this historic landmark. The other part that is difficult to explain to the state is that it is they who neglected this station for decades, and it is us who are willing to fix their mess for them. But they continue to make it very difficult,” Cowie pointed out. Cowie said his committee is now compiling all the information needed to apply for this year’s Open Space and Historic Preservation grant which would allow the WCA to recoup the $17,000 cost of the Historic Structure Report as well as provide the funds for the plans required by the DCA. He said he also intends to apply for funds to replace II & IV • June 16, 2010 Station plans move slowly; new hurdle to be conquered The Waldwick Community Alliance is working on getting permission from the state Department of Community Affairs to start work on the Waldwick Train Station and proceed in phases. According to WCA Vice President Doug Cowie, the DCA is requiring the Alliance to submit entire plans before approval. This includes site plans, engineering, electrical, heating, HVAC, building specs, bid spec, etc. “It is estimated it would cost the Alliance $25,000 $35,000 for these plans. We were hoping to perform these tasks as we approach each phase of the project,” explained Cowie. “I’m simply annoyed that they want us to spend over $50,000 to have someone in the state tell us that we can fix their building. We have worked very hard through our fundraising efforts to raise this money, and we want to see some progress on the building itself,” Cowie added. In May Cowie met with department heads of NJ Transit and representatives from the State Historic Preservation Office, all of whom indicated they were willing to give the “green-light” on the restoration, subject to DCA approvals, he said. Their support was based on the results of the the roof and rebuild the rotted sill plate, the two biggest costs related to the overall restoration of the station. Cowie said that there is no word yet on the due date for the applications or when they will be awarded. He said, however, that he was told the county is considering changing the award dates in order to allow for more time during the good weather months for construction. “My numerous conversations with those from within the county gave me great optimism that they will be willing to support our project and are quite impressed with our ability to fundraise in a time when other organizations are floundering. I attribute this to the pride that the citizens of Waldwick have in their town and their desire to see the most identifiable building in town restored,” Cowie said. “I cannot wait to restore this building, create a historical museum and open it up to the people of Waldwick.” Film series features Oscar winners Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films of the past on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction, setting the film in its historical context, will precede each screening.
