Urinyi will be honored by the Northern New Jersey Council, Iaoapogh Mountains District, Boy Scouts of America with the organization’s Seventh Annual Community Service Award at a cocktail reception and dinner set for Wednesday, Sept. 29. The event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Indian Trail Club in Franklin Lakes. “One of the most important skills that our youth learn in Scouting is leadership. Leadership training is packaged in many exciting ways and performed by many gifted leaders. John R. Urinyi one of those leaders. He is a role model for our youth, and our committee is truly pleased to have the opportunity to honor John at this year’s community service recognition dinner,” commented Charles H. Shotmeyer, the event’s chairman and the award’s first recipient in 2004. “Leading by example and willing to help wherever needed, John selflessly gives of his time and talents to civic and charitable organizations.” An Eagle Scout and the recipient of the Silver Beaver Borough man to be honored by Boy Scouts Award, Urinyi has been active in Scouting for more than 45 years. As a youth, he earned the rank of Eagle with three palms with Troop 5 in Hackensack and was on the camp staff of NoBeBoSco. As an adult, he has served in many positions, including Scoutmaster, roundtable commissioner, district commissioner, district chairman, vice president for district operations, council commissioner, wood badge staff and course director, camp visitation specialist, and as a member of the council executive board and committee. He has received the Silver Beaver, the District Award of Merit, and the Distinguished Commissioner Award. Urinyi is an active member of Saint Paul Church in Ramsey, where he is a member of the Parish Facility Committee and is a Eucharistic minister. He served as a Naval Reserve officer with the Civil Engineer Corps where he was a commanding officer of a naval construction battalion (SEABEES) and a commodore of a naval construction regiment. He is a retired Navy captain. He is a professional engineer licensed in New Jersey and New York. Currently, he is director of capital planning, design, and construction with William Paterson University of New Jersey in Wayne. Previously, he was with the construction department for the World Trade Center with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The honoree and his wife, Sheila, have resided in Ramsey for over 40 years. They have three children and four grandchildren. The Iaoapogh Mountains District serves more than 3,000 Boy Scouts in the area, including the communities of Allendale, Franklin Lakes, Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus, John R.
