Valley hosts heart support group The Valley Hospital is offering a monthly educational and support program for heart patients and their families. The program will be held the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Dorothy B. Kraft Center, 15 Essex Road, Paramus. The next meeting will be June 15. Attendees may bring their medications and ask questions about them. Registration is required. Highlands Hockey holds golf outing Highlands Hockey Association will hold its Eleventh Annual Highlands Hockey Golf Classic on Tuesday, June 15 at Spook Rock Golf Club, 233 Spook Rock Road, Suffern, New York. All proceeds subsidize the cost of the Highlands Hockey Association Youth Hockey Program and the Junior Varsity/ Varsity Ice Hockey teams at Northern Highlands Regional High School. Golfers and attendees at the cocktail reception and buffet dinner are invited to sign up. Event sponsors are also needed. Richman to entertain The Northwest Bergen Regional Senior Center will present “A Musical Journey with Libby Richman” on Wednesday, June 16 at 12:30 p.m. This performance is free and open to all Bergen County seniors who are age 60 and up. Attendees will learn about Richman’s love for the saxophone, the invention of the saxophone in 1845, and the origins of jazz. The audience will listen to Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Swing Era and Motown music, and tunes from Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Sign up by calling (201) 445-5690. Lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m. for a requested donation of $1.25. Reservations for lunch should be received by June 14. Wyckoff Day set Wyckoff’s first ever Wyckoff Day is planned for Saturday, June 12 from noon to dusk at the Wyckoff Family YMCA, 691 Wyckoff Avenue, Wyckoff. The event will include attractions, rides, crafts, hayrides, and entertainment, including Alexandra Kelly, a 20-year-old singer/ songwriter. The day will be topped off by a free outdoor concert by the “B Street Band” – the original Bruce Springsteen Tribute Band. There will be free parking and shuttle service from Advent Lutheran Church, Cornerstone Christian Church, Powerhouse Christian Church, Washington School, and Wyckoff Reformed Church. Volunteer counselors sought The Muscular Dystrophy Association is seeking volunteer counselors to assist young people with neuromuscular diseases and help them enjoy a week at MDA summer camp, Aug. 21 to 28 at Visions Camp in Spring Valley, New York. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and able to lift and care for a young person between the ages of six and 17. Volunteer counselors will assist campers with daily activities such at eating, bathing, and dressing. Counselors will also assist campers with recreational activities such as
Troop 77 sets flag retirement ceremony
Boy Scout Troop 77 of Bethany Church in Wyckoff will hold a flag retirement ceremony on Flag Day, June 14 at 7 p.m. at Wortendyke Veterans Plaza in Midland Park. Troop Committee Planning Chairman Andy Garlick contacted Midland Park when the troop was looking for a respectful place to retire the flags. “Veterans Park is a very appropriate place to hold the ceremony,” explained Garlick. “It is a large enough space to accommodate a crowd; there is ample parking; and a beautiful setting.” Troop 77 has been providing this service to the comarts and crafts, swimming, and adapted sports. MDA Summer Camp is a one-week sleepover camp for young people between the ages of six and 17 who are affected by neuromuscular disease. Summer Concert Series announced The Wyckoff Family YMCA will offer a line up of four performances at its Spring Lake Concert Series this summer. All concerts will take place under the stars at the lake, 691 Wyckoff Avenue in Wyckoff. On June 30, “Jimmy and the Parrots” will perform great Buffett songs, and new and classic rock n’ roll. On July 29, audiences are invited to hear “The Kootz,” a group of North Jersey guys and their musical friends, with a collective passion for classic rock, pop, soul, and blues. “The Kennedys” will offer their blend acoustic-based folk, rock, country, pop, and secular gospel on Thursday, Aug. 12. The fourth concert will feature Mack Bailey and Rachel Levy on Sept. 3 when the duo combines folk, country, and bluegrass for a sound all their own. All concerts are at 7:30 p.m. Attendees should bring blankets and chairs for seating. Ticket prices for all Spring Lake shows are $15 per adult in advance and $18 the day of the show. Salt Water Anglers to meet Jeff Merrill will offer tips on catching striped bass by live lining at the June 15 meeting of the Salt Water Anglers of Bergen County. munity since 2005 when George Ryan Ahlmeyer, one of its members, installed the flag drop at Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff as his Eagle Scout project. The preparation and retiring of flags has since developed into a Troop 77 commitment. The boys in the troop spend weeks cutting the flags as dictated by flag etiquette. At the ceremony, the flags will be burned to the recitation of patriotic passages, and eventually buried. Troop 77 has retired nearly 3,000 flags since the project’s inception. The ceremony, which is approximately a half an hour long, is open to the public. All attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. teers who are eager to provide friendly phone calls with individuals who are isolated in their homes. Those who are being called are shut-ins who are unable to get out due to an illness or disability. Sometimes the caller is also a shut-in and is glad to make calls.
