Page 12 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • June 9, 2010 Mahwah Minutes Young athletes sought for Olympic Day The Second Annual Mahwah Olympic Day will be held Saturday, June 26 at Mahwah High School at 10 a.m. Boys and girls ages eight through 12 are invited to participate. Participants can test their skills at running, soccer and football kicking, javelin and football throwing, and the long jump. Children will be divided into two age groups. An Olympic-style awards ceremony will follow. Pre-registration will be held June 16 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the recreation building at Commodore Perry Field. Registration may also be completed on the day of the event. Proof of residency is required. All participants should arrive by 9:30 a.m. and must bring proof of residency. Shakespeare comes to the library The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey Next Stage eNSemble will perform Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” on Wednesday June 30 at 7 p.m. at the Mahwah Library. “As You Like It” follows heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle’s court, accompanied by her cousin and the court jester. This play features one of Shakespeare’s most famous and oft-quoted speeches, “All the world’s a stage…” No tickets are necessary for this program.Latecomers will be seated during appropriate breaks. Incoming Veterans of Foreign Wars District 2 Commander John J Kelly of Mahwah and his grandson Connor recently placed flags at the graves of fallen heroes of previous conflicts at Mary Rest Cemetery in Mahwah, passing along a sacred tradition. District 2 covers all 41 Veteran of Foreign War Posts in Bergen County. Sacred tradition Police participate in Torch Run Mahwah PBA Local 143 will join law enforcement officers statewide to participate in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of New Jersey Special Olympics on Friday, June, 11. The Mahwah officers will be starting leg 10a, which begins at the Mahwah Police Department on Franklin Turnpike at 6:30 a.m. and proceeds along Franklin Turnpike south to the Shop Rite in Ramsey. The route then continues to the Fairview Police Department 36 miles later, where it meets leg 10b, which comes from Northvale. Participants in this celebrated 27-leg journey carry the Special Olympics New Jersey “Flame of Hope” a distance of nearly 900 miles throughout the Garden State to the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, where the torch is used to ignite the cauldron for the Opening Ceremony of the Summer Games. The public is invited to adopt-a-cop or make a donation to the Special Olympics by contacting Sergeant Jeff Dino of the Mahwah Police Department and to join the force on the torch route on Franklin Turnpike on June 11 in support of the Special Olympics. Registration for adult soccer program set Mahwah Recreation Committee is sponsoring a 7V7 Coed Adult Soccer league, which will be open to Mahwah residents only. In-person registration will be held June 15 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the recreation building at Commodore Perry Field. Proof of residency and a $30 fee must be presented at registration. All participants must be 18 years of age or older before the July registration. Games will begin early July and continue through midAugust on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 8 and 10 p.m. The registration form is online at www.mahwahtwp.org. Chamber hosts networking event The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold a regional business card exchange in conjunction with the Montvale Chamber of Commerce on June 22, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Lucky Strike West Nyack, 4662 Palisades Center Drive, Fourth Floor in West Nyack, New York. This Hollywood-style bowling location transforms an American pastime into a fun lounge experience. Refreshments and a cash bar will be available. The cost is $15 for Chamber members $15; $30 for non-members. Prepaid registration is required; an additional $5 processing fee will be charged if paid the day of event. Bargain Bonanza set The Ramapo Reformed Church’s Bargain Bonanza will be held on Friday, June 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, June 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A bounty of treasures will be for sale along with sandwiches, dessert, and refreshments. Family Skate Day planned The Mahwah Ice Hockey Association will sponsor a free Family Skate Day on Sunday, June 13 at Sport-O-Rama Ice Rink from 12:30 to 2 p.m. A “Learn to Play Hockey” clinic with equipment provided by Sport-O-Rama will follow. The clinic is also free of charge. Skate rentals are available from the rink. Sport-O-Rama is located at 20 College Road in Suffern, New York. The Mahwah Ice Hockey Association was established 12 years ago as a 501 C3 non-profit organization to promote ice hockey to Mahwah youth and help subsidize high school junior varsity and varsity hockey programs.
