Clear Wireless to add antennas to monopole
by Frank J. McMahon Clear Wireless, LLC has received the Mahwah Zoning Board of Adjustment’s approval to co-locate six wireless antennas on an existing monopole at the end of Whitney Road. The company will also install an equipment cabinet and one GPS antenna on a 100 square foot platform compound area that is on a platform several feet above the ground. The monopole is located on the east side of the end of the Whitney Road cul-de-sac, which is in the GI-80 industrial zone. The property is bordered on the north, south, and west by GI-80 zoned property, the HoHo-Kus Brook to the east and south, and the Township of Wyckoff to the east. The property is currently developed with an existing one-story industrial building that is owned by TAM Realty Associates. Clear Wireless, which is located in Rochelle Park, will be the fourth wireless communications company to locate on the simulated pine tree monopole, which was approved for that use by the zoning board in 2004. This will be Clear Wireless’ first site in Mahwah. Omnipoint and Nextel Communications received the first approval to locate 12 antennas on the pole at the 120-foot level with a fenced-in equipment area. At that time, the monopole was approved to hold the antennas of five wireless communications companies. After that, AT&T received approval to locate 12 antennas at the 98-foot level with an equipment structure within the fenced-in area. In March 2007, the Verizon Communications Company received approval to allow 12 antennas at the 108 foot level. Clear Wireless will install its antennas at the 88-foot level. According to the application, the co-location of the Clear Wireless antennas will not necessitate any modifications to the monopole. A radio frequency engineer testified about the Clear Wireless antennas during the public hearing and assured the board that the frequency range of his client’s antennas will not have an effect on nearby children’s day care facilities. He emphasized that the wireless company’s operation must follow all the regulations of the Federal Communications Commission. Dave Collins, who handles FCC compliance issues for the Pinnacle Telecommunications Group, advised the board that radio frequency energy around the site as a result of the Clear Wireless antennas will be 230 times below the maximum permitted by the FCC, making them within compliance by a wide margin. In regard to the potential effect on the children’s day care facilities, (continued on page 8)
