State Line Diner owes its success to a trio of dedicated brothers. Michael, John, and Nick Nissirios opened their doors at 375 Route 17 North in Mahwah on Jan. 26, 1976, and the community responded with enthusiasm. The business truly is a family affair. The owners’ cousin, George, has worked at the diner for 33 years, and is currently the manager. Over the years, the diner has been expanded twice and remodeled regularly. The owners plan to update the décor again this summer. While State Line Diner serves traditional fare, Michael says the fresh seafood is a specialty. Popular options include the fried calamari with marinara sauce and the fried deep sea scallops served with tartar sauce. Options also include baked stuffed clams, broiled filet of sole with crabmeat stuffing, broiled swordfish, and two new dishes: broiled Alaskan halibut steak with lemon butter sauce and broiled crab cakes. The menu features a wide variety of choices for every meal. Begin the day with some fresh fruit, juice, or coffee, and then dig into some diner favorites, including eggs benedict; the new breakfast wrap with scrambled eggs, home fries, and American cheese; or a specialty omelet. made with homemade batter and served up in a regular or short stack, with fruit or chocolate chips, silver dollar style, and with breakfast meats. A new option is the raisin pancakes with cinnamon, and a diner favorite is the Pancakes a la State Line – served with eggs and a choice of ham, bacon, or sausage (pork or turkey) or taylor ham. The french toast is made with old fashioned homemade thick challah bread dipped in egg batter and grilled until golden. Enjoy this selection with our without fruit, eggs, and breakfast meat. Another option is the Monte Cristo, a grilled specialty sandwich that begins with french toast piled high with ham and white meat turkey topped with melted Swiss cheese. Belgian waffles are also served up with breakfast meats, eggs, or fruit. There is a dizzying selection of lunch entrees, including grilled salmon and cold salad platters for the calorie-conscious, triple-decker club sandwiches, hamburgers, and panini. But no diner would be complete without authentic Greek specialties: moussaka – fashioned from grilled eggplant, potatoes, seasoned ground beef, and béchamel sauce, and spinach pie – spinach, feta, and onion cradled in phyllo dough and baked. If you still can’t decide, the diner also features lunch specials every
