Next Stage eNSemble to perform The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s Next Stage eNSemble will perform “The Rover” in the Winter Room of the Mahwah Public Library on July 27 at 7 p.m. “The Rover” or “The Banish’d Cavaliers” was written by the English author Aphra Behn. Behn was a spy for Charles II against the Dutch. However, Charles was slow to pay her for her services, if he ever paid her at all. Behn sought to make money first with her poetry, and then with plays and novels. “The Rover” appeared on the stage in 1677. The subtitle, “Banish’d Cavaliers,” is a reference to the world of exile that the Cavalier forces experienced during the interregnum. The play features multiple plots dealing with the amorous adventures of a group of Englishmen in Naples at Carnival time. Each summer, abridged classics are presented by earlycareer actors from the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. The Next Stage eNSemble program brings live theater into New Jersey communities. No tickets are necessary for this program. Seats are free and will be available on a “first come” basis. The Mahwah Library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Call (201) 529-READ.
