Mahwah July 21, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 7 Yvonne Beatrice, an educator at Mahwah High School, has been named the 2010 New Jersey State Preserve American History Teacher of the Year. Beatrice was cited for her use of primary documents in the classroom, the level of inspiration she provides to her students, and her career achievements. She will receive a certificate of recognition and a $1,000 check. In addition, an archive of classroom resources will be presented in her name to the Mahwah High School Library. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History awards the Preserve America History Teacher of the Year title each year in its effort to promote the study and love of American history. This program honors outstanding history teachers across the United States. “It’s an honor to have received this recognition,” Beatrice said. She quickly acknowledged her students, saying the institute was impressed with the quality of their work. Beatrice has also been chosen by a panel of school teachers, administrators, and academics from the state to compete in the National History Teacher of the Year competition. The winner of the national prize, who will be named this fall, will receive $10,000 from The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Beatrice was nominated for the state honor by Charles Carreras, the parent of one of her former students. Carreras, who is presently associated with the Mahwah Museum, was a history professor at Ramapo College until his retirement. He has opened the museum’s archives to Beatrice’s students and assisted them with their research as they work on the “Meet Mahwah” project, which Beatrice created. This intensive research project requires students to visit various areas of the township, research four historical structures, attend a meeting of a township entity (such as the council or the municipal court), and interview a longtime resident. “I like to get kids out in the field, and they tell me they never look at the town the same way again,” Beatrice said. Beatrice receives state-level Teacher of the Year honor Pictured are Charles Carreras, who nominated Beatrice for the award; Yvonne Beatrice, honoree; and John Pascale, principal of Mahwah High School. Beatrice, a graduate of Montclair State College (now Montclair State University), is a Fair Lawn native who moved to Mahwah 23 years ago. Before the arrival of her two children, she taught in the Ridgewood and Hawthorne school districts. Ten years ago, she began the second leg of her bifurcated career, starting work at Mahwah High School the same year her daughter enrolled as a student. “We joke that my daughter and I began high school together,” Beatrice said. The honoree and her husband, Michael Beatrice, Esq., have also coached the Mahwah High School Mock Trial Team for the past eight years, and recently led the group to the top spot in a countywide competition. The husband and wife are perfect for the job, since regulations require each team to have two coaches: one teacher and one lawyer. Beatrice clearly enjoys her profession. “I really enjoy the kids,” she said. “They become like your family. They are part of your life.” $ummer $izzler $ale!
